Problems running applications

hi

I've got win xp home on my laptop, 1.8ghz celeron 256mb ram, The o/s starts
up fine then when i get to the desktop, i try and click and application or
open a folder but the computer then just stops and icant get into anything.

Ive been in safe mode and ive deleted a load of programs and defragged but
still get the problem

please help
