As in "Packed Together" in adjacent Clusters. However, Defrag
does not make files smaller, it just puts all the pieces together.

The point made is not whether or not defrag compacts files but rather that
defrag reports compacting files and that is where the OP reported defrag was
hanging. "Defrag doesnt compact files" seems irrelevant to the OP problem of
"It get to 1% compacting files and just stays their".

I might have misinterpreted the message. For XP native defrag I would
do a cursory Chkdsk first and maybe an Analyze to see what level of
fragmentation exists. Usually, you'll see a extended pause at around 20%
of a partition as it (defrag) encounters the MFT. As far as "Staying" at
1% - how much time elapsed ? - Defrag has to repositition data to get
adequate free space to begin processing.

I have a new laptop running Windows XP Home SP2. I have the same problem
with defrag. It analyzes fine then says "Defragging: 1% compacting files"
and it hangs there with the HD light continually on. I ran chkdsk. Nothing
different. Still won't defrag. I have 64% free space on my hard drive. Can
anyone help?

:

How long did you let it run for? Do a chkdsk first. After that boot
into safe mode and try the defrag.

I let it run for 45 minutes. Nothing changed. I also ran scandisk before that.

Are you running an upgrade version of Windows XP.....if so check your file
system. I had the same problem and changed the file system to NTFS from
FAT32. There is a utility in XP which will allow you to change the file
system. It defragged in minutes.
