Problems running any game on Vista Business x64

Hello there,

Any game I run on Vista Business x64 gives me some problems. I can play
games for anywhere between 4 minutes and 4 hours. But after a certain amount
of time, my computer completly locks up (not even a BSOD). The game just
freezes and my sound goes berzerk (it's sounds like a weird repeating sound
kind of virus like). I have run all virus scans, disk defrag and updated all
of my drivers. I had SP1 installed and thought that it might be the problem.
I uninstalled SP1 but it happened again.

I am now at a standstill and do not know what else needs to be done...

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Random freezing is usually the result of a hardware failure. From the sounds
(pun intended) of it, the problem may lie in your sound card. It's also
possible that the odd sound is just a response to the error coming from
elsewhere (exactly what does a virus sound like anyhow?).

Possible things going wrong:

- overheating - this is the most common problem and can be addressed by
ensuring proper circulation, clean and correctly operating fans, and
cleaning the heat sink.
- memory fault - also very common, and there is a memory diagnostic included
with Vista that can be used to determine if this is the issue.
- power supply voltage - you'd need testing equipment.
- bad capacitor on the motherboard - something for a tech to diagnose
- faulty/loose drive cable or failing driver - reseating both ends may help,
as may getting an updated driver from the motherboard manufacturer
- failing hard drive - most manufacturers have diagnostic tools available
for download to detect this issue.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have updated the sound card drivers, I have
also disabled the sound card from loading straight from my bios and the same
crash happened.

Something that I forgot to mention was that I am currently on a laptop.

- overheating - I doubt the laptop is overheating as I have opened it and
cleaned it a few times.
- memory fault - I have run memtest 86 (off the hirens boot disk) and let it
go through about 6 times with no errors being reported.
- hard drive - the hard drive was purchased about 2 months ago and also has
been tested.

My only last opinion is that the issue is with vista itself. Is this a
possibility?? The laptop that I am using is an ASUS A7J. I upgraded the OS
after upgrading my CPU on it to a Dual Core CPU. I myself am a techy that
works at a computer store, but this issue has completly stumped me. Is there
anything else that I could try?

Hi,

It may be Vista in that there is possibly an incompatibility between it and
the hardware, but I'm betting it's not. Vista on hardware built for it is
very stable. You should also check for a BIOS update.

I'm betting that there is some faulty hardware in there. If the system is
under warranty, have it checked by the manufacturer.
