Problems Read Only Attributes cant be changed?

M

Mark Scott

Xp pro

Its only just become apparent that I can change the attributes to a folder?
What I mean is that when I create a new folder anywhere the attributes are
always "read only".
When I attempt to change these to "no tick" and "apply" when I re launch
properties
the attributes have returned to "read only again".
I pretty experienced with xp and this has got me baffled?
It came to light when I was trying to copy some files across the workgroup
network for back up purposes.
The files attributes can be removed but not the folder?
Ive checked permissions / the obvious too me any way and all the ticks are
in the right places.

My hunch is that it might have something to do with "Home Network wizard"?
I was messing around (only viewing the options) with Security and sharing by
disabling "View simple file sharing" in folder options.

I didn't change any of the internal settings but messed around with folder
options.
But my system is again running with "simple File sharing enabled"

So I'm going to try to run the network wizard again and see if that makes a
difference?
Its also happened on a work group computer also with the same problem as
above,
and this is what is the only thing that I can think of to cross contaminate
both machines..
Home network setup disk...

Any idea's ?
Or more questions?

Thanks in advance Mark

Strange?
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326549#appliesto
I just pulled that link out of a post from "Fiouz", "Read only attributes
has 3 states"

What is strange is why this has never happened to me before in all the time
using xp pro across a workgroup network? I am logged in as a administrator.
I don't think I will use the advice at the moment in the Microsoft KB as it
seems to implie that changing the security attributes could cause other
problems?
But like I mentioned that the strange thing is that every time I create a
new folder its "read only" all the time.
And following the advice of MS, Kbase I would have to do the attribute
change on every file created?
Well that's how I under stood it?

I am going to try running the Home network wizard again in the morning and
see if that changes anything for me?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Mark,

See one of my recent posts in this newsgroup on this topic
to thread "Still read-only" started at 10:15 for example

That you never noticed this about folders before is really
only a statement of what you have noticed, not of how
things have changed (they have not). W2k was not like
this, but XP and later are.

I had the same questions tonight. The best answer I
could find is located here, although it did not clarify
WHY this is as it is. I mean, **ALL** folders I create
get that unchangeable read-only thing... any and every
folder I create anywhere. Very strange. Anyway, here's
the link. I know it won't help your curiosity, but this
was all I could find, and since it described the
situation perfectly, I think it's the best we're gonna
get :(

Okay
Not many people publish there mistakes but here we go...

Because access was denied while copying and pasting files across a workgroup
i recieved the error.
"ACCESS DENIED" is the file write protected or the disk full?
I knew the disk want full so i assumed it had to be file access.
Which then brings us to the link provided which is correct but wasnt the
cause of my problem.

On the other workgroup machine i had been messing around with persmissions
and sharing also,
but forgot that i had not ticked "Let other network users change files".
Almost there!
When i had un ticked "simple file sharing"
I had also created a share with the $ suffix.
I had to delete this share and us the default without the $.
Ticked use simple file sharing again and it all workes.

And that's why i never noticed in the past that the "Read Only" attribute
never changes,
because i never had an issue with moving data over the network workgroup.
So with the "Access Denied" prompt showing up that's why i thought that it
was to do with file access.
So the "Read Only" topic isnt an issue for me now but handy to know.
Thanks again everyone for your help.

Your share with the $ would have worked if you have
adjusted the permissions it received by default (using
the Permissions button on the Shares tab). Both the
share permissions and the NTFS permissions must allow
the action one is trying to use remotely.
