Problems re-establishing a home network

Yesterday we had an internet satelitte system installed; with it's router
(Netgear) and modem. Previously, for years, had dial-up and had a simple 2
computer system home network where we shared files using the crossover cable
sysstem. Both computers have XP Pro with SP2.

Spent the better part of the day, and night, since then trying to
re-establish the home network. Nothing I seem to do works. When I go thru
the set up wizard for both machines, I designate that both connect to the
internet via a 'hub'; and also mark file sharing on both. I have also, in
trying to get it figured out, disabled the XP firewall. All to no avail.

On my machine, which I call MASTER, when I click on My Network Places, it
shows up the wife's computer (SLAVE) but when clicked on, get the message
that \\SLAVE is not accessible and "network path was not found".

Then on SLAVE, doing the same process, get the message "MShome is not
accessible" and "list of servers for workgroup not available" ... and both
messages refer me to the administrator, of which I am on both computers.
Nothing else shows up on SLAVE other than that message ... even though on
MASTER, I get the initial indication that SLAVE is being 'seen' at least.

I feel certain it may be connected with the router ... but I am a total
novice when it comes to them. The installer indicated that no 'driver'
process was needed with the router and that the system would do self
detection ... but it seems strange that pre-router everything worked fine.
He did however checked and reset some internal settings on both computers,
but unfortunately, he went so fast could not follow the process. So, could
be this I suppose.

Appreciate your assistance.

Connecting to the internet through a hub just isn't going to happen.

Modem->-Router->-Switch->--Computers.

Using the network wizard, you selected Other, then connects through a hub?

Stop calling your machine Master.
It is no longer providing the Internet for your wife's computer.

You want both computers to use the same network name.

Thanks Ron. The names were assigned pre-router days; as I indicated we used
a dial-up and 'shared' the connection via usage of a crossover cable.

Yes, I selected 'Other' ... as you indicated. Thus the reference in my
posting regarding 'hub'; since that is the phrase that MS uses.

But, being a novice to these things called routers, I am lost with the rest
of your posting. At least on my computer ... named MASTER ... I can see
'SLAVE'. But SLAVE cannot see anything; and says it cannot see the servers
.... or somethng like that. And on MASTER, I get the message regarding
network not being detected.(Don't have the other one on now to confirm the
precise message for it.)

I'm 'under the impression' it may be internal settings. I did check
properties for the LAN and recall seeing the 'Automatic detect ip address'
box checked.

Should it be????? Or should it have the ip addresses that ipconfig detects
when run. Also did the ping test and both computers, from mine, come back
with no problems. I raise this issue with ip addresses because while I was
trying to get Zonealarm to work, I recall it advivisng to put trusted
computer ip addresses in the Trusted arena. ZA is now totally disabled until
I get this figured out. AM using XP firewall for time being.

So what should I try next? Hope this additional dialogue helps somewhat.

You must disable Internet Connection Firewall after using the Network
Wizard.

Your wife's computer needs the network removed and start over.

Thanks Ron. I took a look at the first link and I 'think' I have deciphered
it enough to continue. But before doing that, I need to have some guidance
on how to remove a network. I googled this today but could not find
decipherable instructions.
