I have XP home edition, it came pre-installed on my comp. I had a dialup
connection and while I was connected I couln't open some applications. Right
now I have dedicated conexion and I couldn't open some of the applications.
What should I do? Reintall the OS?

What applications can you not open, and how long has this been going on?
Is one of the applications Internet Explorer?

No, do not re-install the o.s.

Well some "large" applications like wordPerfect. I've donwloaded minutes ago
Ad-aware I've tried to running it and I couldn't. I can open some small
applications like notepad perfectly. No the IE runs OK. I guess this problem
is almost since the moment I've bought my comp. but I believed it was a
conflict between the software of my ISP and Win XP home.

Hello Tono,

When was this computer purchased and from whom ( a manufacturer like Dell or HP, or ? ..... or from a local OEM shop, or from a chain store?)
You probably should seek support from your vendor, if as you said, "I guess this problem is almost since the moment I've bought my comp."

Does WordPerfect show an "error / exception message"? Does Windows give an error message?

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.

In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart.

Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).
Apply change.

See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Also: Let's see how much RAM memory this system has, and how much virtual memory is available.
From Start menu, select RUN, type in

msinfo32.exe

On the System Summary page (on right-hand frame) , jot down & post back these items

Total physical memory
Available physical memory
Total virtual memory
Available virtual memory
Page file space

I might suggest you reboot the system into Safe mode, and do a one-time test. Run Ad-aware in safe mode.
Tap F8 key as pc is rebooting and select Safe mode.

Another suggestion I'd offer to test in normal mode of Windows:
Logoff & restart Windows/ or reboot/ when it gets to the login prompt (if it requires a login), first press (and hold) the SHIFT key, then login (keep holding SHIFT key until your Desktop is all done displaying the desktop.)

If the system does not require a user login, press & hold SHIFT key when Windows is loading.

This will keep some auto-startup programs from loading. You want to simplify what Windows is running. Then run Ad-Aware , get latest definitions, and run a full scan.

I've done that...

The event says:

Date: 5/13... Source: Application Hang
Time: 10:40:50 Category: (101)
Type: Error Event ID: 1002
User: N/A
Comp: ....

Description:
Hanging application Ad-Aware.exe, version 6.2.0.236, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

I've a couple of error more...

the difference is Event ID: 1001

Description:
Fault bucket 19853104

About my comp is a Dell, I tried to get some help from them but the
employee, after a review of my hardware, told me that my hardware
was working properly. They made a connection with the people of
software, and they told me that I have to pay a fee for that service.

Ive been working with windows XP (since it came out) for a long time,
but it always was the pro version (I never had problems with it). With,
the money I could pay for that fee I can buy the Pro version.

By the way Thank you for your help...

Hi Tono,

Here's a webpage relating to application hang with event id 1002. You may review it to see if anything helps shed some light.

Given that this is happening when run Ad-Aware, I have a concern and some tips.
The concern is that you may have a malware infection which is blocking the running of Ad-Aware {and to some lesser extent, you may have a hardware issue with flaky RAM memory, or a conflict with other open/running programs}.

(a) Make sure your system is malware free.
As long as your Adaware has the most up-to-date definitions, run it in Safe mode, and do another run in normal mode of Windows.
When in normal mode Windows, do not have other applications / utilities / antivirus programs "running actively" when you run Ad-aware {or another cleanup utility.....e.g, run one utility by itself }

You are highly urged to follow the steps at
"The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol"
<http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm>

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Security

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

(b) Get the latest versions of cleanup tools and their definitions. Run tools in Safe mode first, and then run in normal mode.
Run MSCONFIG.

In there, review your startup programs in the Startup Tab, and review the Services Tab for the non-Windows (Microsoft) services.
Use MSCONFIG to minimize all startup programs to just firewall (if using 3rd-party firewall).

Make a written list of what you disabled, so that later on you re-enable the ones you want to keep.
But while doing cleanups, keep startups to a very few.

Post back here with details on your progress.

Thanks Maurice...

I've found the problem, I don't know why the Norton Internet Security was
causing these issues...

I've done what you told me about the services in MSCONFIG, now the comp. is
running a way lot better.
