Problems logging onto Windows XP Home

My computer is booting fine, and brings up the login
screen for accounts (of which i only have one).


However, if i select to log on to the account. I
see "loading settings" quickly followed by saving
settings and do not get logged into windows.

This happens both when i log into the computer as Admin &
the main user.

I could really use some help if someone has some magic.
 
I am by no means an expert with XP and there may be a simpler solution; however if I was having this problem I would slave my harddrive onto annother computer, copy the files I need to that HDD, then format my HDD and reinstall windows XP.
 
Try safe mode? Reboot, press F8 after the BIOS screen....
