problems installing xp

hi,I'm haveing problems installing xp,I can go through the
installation fine,but when it restarts,it goes to a black
screen with white slashes at the bottom and it says
windows is starting up,but it doesn't do anything,I left
it all nite and nothing.

Hope you can help
 
If this is the first attempt at Install did you do a WinXP hardware and
software compability check?
