Almost every time I try to install an application from CD-ROM, I get error
messages that CAB files are corrupt, or that DLL files are missing. I used
to be able to click Ignore repeatedly and get around it. But newer
applications just uninstall. The device manager tells me the CD-ROM drive is
working properly. Do I need to do a recovery from my D: drive, or is there
an easier solution?

try using this command on command line sfc /scannow

You need OS CD in CD ROM before you execute this command.

Secondly
Do you have any problem while opening MS-Office if you have one installed.
