Problems Installing PC Card

I have a Compaq Presario 1247 and am running Windows XP
Professional. I have purchased a LinkSys EtherFast
Integrated PC Card PCM100 ver. 2. I followed the
instructions included with the PC Card and it said to plug
in the device while the computer is off, then turn it on
and Windows XP should automatically notice that new
hardware is plugged in.

This is when I knew something was wrong. No message came
up, so I attempted to install the device manually through
the add new hardware wizard. When I got to the end of the
wizard and began to copy files off of the LinkSys disk, it
abruptly stopped and said that there was an error
installing. The error read 'Error Code 10: The device will
not start.' I thought it might be the card, so I brought
it back and repeated the whole procedure with the new one
and the same thing happened.

My PCMCIA adapter is Texas Instruments 1211 CardBus
Controller. I don't know if this is relevant but I thought
I'd say it anyway.

My questions are these: Is it possible that my computer is
not sending power to the PC Card slot? If so, can I
reroute any to it through BIOS or any other means? Could
the slot just be broken and need repairs? Is there a
compatibility issue with the PCMCIA adapter and the PC
Card that I have? Would buying a USB Ethernet adapter be a
wise move to circumvent this problem? Any help that anyone
could offer would be just grand. Thank you.

Open BIOS,advanced chip-set control,set adapter to pci
from the agp mode its probably in,then exit page, save
changes and exit BIOS.
