hi marlene,
often windows comes into problems with media player when
3rd party players or codecs are installed on "top" of
microsoft media player.
let me explain, if you examine your audio codecs, yes
everything can look fine, however, you may find that for
example if you click on a windows media file in your
browser and attempt to open it. explorer will retunr an
error message and close the browser returning the
dreaded "send error report to microsoft" blurb.
i have experienced this problem myself personally on win
2000.
the only way i could solve it in the end marlene was to
view the error report generated in internet explorer.
i feel terrible now that i cant remember the error code,
but i can promise you this. when you follow the error
report and view the error, microsoft recommend that you
visit a site where you are able to download a free codec
revision that corrects this error.
i did, and the error was corrected. for me, the error was
due to a conflicting codec which i could not detect
through the system control panel and codec property
settings.
i know that this post seems very vaque. but i promise if
you go to a website with an .mpg media file on it and
click the file which would normally open, follow the error
report from explorer and the advice from the microsoft
database from there. it worked for me. and it sounds as
though you are experiencing the exact problems i did.
i know its been vaque marlene, but try to click on a media
link in explorer and follow the error report as i say, and
you'll be fine.
i hope i've been of some help.
if you have any further problems on this error, you could
contact, james, one of my audio staff at
http://www.123powerpoint.com.
he is much more versed in codecs than myself, and the
various errors and solutions to media player, i'm sure
that if you are unable to solve this problem, his
knowledge will be of benefit.
i'm sorry that i have been so late in responding to your
post. but hope that my response provides some assistance.
Regards,
Scott Harvey,

To be honest, I was having a hard time following in the
post what all is going on on your system. So let's start
here:
there seems to be a lot of problems initiating
visual files. I can however insert and play audio files
in powerpoint with media player 9. I have updated the MCI
settings and they are correct. so are my codecs.
How are you going about inserting and playing audio files
in PPT with Windows Media Player 9?
What version of PPT? What version of Windows?
Assuming Win2k or XP, where did you update the MCI
settings -- in the registry, or just in the INI files?
What codecs do your videos use? Have you tested them
using Start/Run and typing mplay32.exe? Do they play there?
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia
..htm ?
powerpoint also says that it has encountered a
problem that it can't fix and i must shut down and
restart. having done that a couple of times, it keeps on
saying it. also detected and repaired but still the
same.
When does this "encountered a problem" error occur?

thanks, had a look and i understand why quicktime won't
work properly, but what about mplayer32.exe problems in
powerpoint that won't let me insert windows media files
either?

thanks for your help
:
I suspect it's a simple issue here -- PPT and QT don't play well together.
PPT will handle QT versions 1, 2, and 2.5. All other bets are off.

i am experiencing problems with initiating the
media player or inserting files into powerpoint that is
played by the media player. also when i insert quicktime
files it says that the file types is not recognised by
quicktime either (files not recognised or quicktime not
properly installed), although it is a quicktime movie
(quicktime 6.5.1).
