Problems in a mixed network of XP, W98 &W95 computers

Richard Webb

I have a home network of one XP and one W98 computer and wish to use
an old laptop running Win95 as a print server for this network. The
default Win95 network installation showed Entire network but no
individual computers. Forcing line speed to 10 Mbps and line mode to
half duplex has enabled the W95 box to see the other computers, but it
still can't see itself, nor can the other computers see it, although I
can ping in either direction by network addresss and also by name. Can
anybody help me please?
Kind regards

Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is installed on Win95. That's
what makes it visible to itself and other computers.

Thanks Steve. File and printer sharing was installed as part of the
network setup on Win95, along with Client for Microsoft networks,
TCP/IP and the network card (a Xircom 10/100 pcmcia card).

Is the printer or anything else shared yet? The win95 pc won't show up
unless it has something to show.

Actually, Matt, the Windows 95 computer will appear in Network
Neighborhood on W95 and W98 if File and Printer Sharing is enabled,
whether or not it has actually shared anything. It won't appear in My
Network Places on WXP unless it has shared a disk or folder.

Richard, if File and Printer Sharing is already installed, something's
wrong with the setup. Un-install File and Printer Sharing, reboot,
and re-install it, telling it to share both files and printers. Also,
make sure that a firewall program on Win95 isn't blocking access to
the computer.

Steve,
Have uninstalled File and Printer sharing, rebooted, re-installed,
still have problem. You said there is something wrong with setup.
There is: when W95 boots, there is an error message "A file specified
in SYSTEM.INI is damaged... vserver.vxd" We had to install W95 by
Laplink as the computer doesn't have a CD-ROM, it was a messy
installation.

Follow the steps shown here under Method 1 to extract a new copy of
the Vserver.vxd file:

Vserver.vxd File Not Found When You Start Your Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;194990

Since your computer doesn't have a CD-ROM, you'll need to copy the
indicated cabinet file to the W95 computer and extract it from there.
