problems connecting to internet after updating

I connect to the internet with Comcast cable. My main computer is a
Mac which is where I configured it. Its connected by wireless to an
Mac Airport wireless modem. My PC (it's no special brand, was put
together from spare parts by an expert) is connected to the wireless
modem directly with an ethernet cord. Since I've had this
configuration I have had no problem connecting to the internet with my
PC in the past. Ever since I downloaded the updates for Windows 2000
I cannot get online. I did not have the blaster worm but wanted to
update to protect it.

When I go to Local Area Connection status it says I'm connected and
packets are being sent and received however I cannot get online and
when I try to ping Yahoo in the terminal window it doesn't find it.
The cable modem is working fine as I can get online with my Mac.

My settings for TCP/IP are to obtain IP address automatically and
obtain DNS server automatically. Its always worked before this way
but I cannot get online. Can anyone help? I don't have a clue of
what to try. Please answer in non-technical terms as, being a Mac
person, I barely know my way around a PC.
