I've had two failed attempts trying to burn 8Gb of data (CD & DVD Covers in MS Publisher format) to a Datawrite Datasafe Media 8.5Gb DVD+R DL Disc. the disc has a red top and purple dye.

I've tried this on two machines, one has a Philips DVDRW and the other has an NEC drive. The burning process failed on both drives.

The Media was cheap so I do suspect the discs. But not that cheap, I bought ten online for ten pounds, I think, so it's enough cash to be concerned about.

Anybody any ideas? My next step will be to buy some single discs, different brands and makes, also try a DVDRW-R disc or two.

Below is the error log from Nero, can anybody make any sense or glean any clues to the failures?

Sorry it's so long but here's the error report:

I can't help decipher the log, but if the problem lies with the discs then I would try Verbatim - they are more expensive, but if you can't get those to work then it must be another reason than the disc.

Not a fan of Nero myself ... is there not a 6.6.1.8 upgrade ?

Looking at the log nothing seems wrong, or out of place, until the last line ... "Burn process failed at 4x" ...

Does Nero allow you to burn dual-layer?
My thoughts also. It should, but is that the Full Nero ??

Floppy, may I boldly suggest you try K3b in Linux. ;)

If that fails, I would be changing my media. :thumb:

Hi Flopp's

Is Nero the full version and is it fully updated, as there was a patch for DL media released about 6 months ago in some updates I got from nero about that time...

Ok, went down the pub at 6, just got back, me tiddly but to address each point:

I only have two IDE evices on this machine, the optical drives. Primary IDE channel DMA wasn't enabled, so I enabled it. I did kind of wonder about DMA myself after reading the error report again.

Attempted to burn dual layer disk again, it got to 18% this time and crashed.

The 18% did actually get to the DVD-R whereas previously nothing was burnt to DVD-R when it crashed.

I note that my RAID 0 setup (on SATA II ports) does not have DMA enabled but I feel that this shouldn't matter as they're not an IDE device. Should it?

I'm really thinking this is a media issue, only trying with alternative media wil prove this, of course.

I thought the last Nero 6 update was January, '06, I will search for and download that latest update mentioned here.

Mucks: I'm using an OEM version of Nero 6 (£3.00 from CCL) which was last patched January '06. I paid £15.00 for the Video plug-in, which allows me to burn DVD's from any video file format.

I've never had a problem with Nero, it's always been flawless. I'd always recommend Nero. As good as the Linux freebie burning software is, I really want to burn this using Windows. Call it a challenge if you will, but please don't tell me to use Linux as a solution to this problem.

I will use Linux, eventually, of course, but for now this is a problem where I don't want to take the easy way out.

I would apreciate a link to the update crazylegs mentioned, or is it actually at the Nero site?

Patched my update directly from the Nero site flopp's when I had to reinstall everything and I'm sure one of the updates was something to do with Dual Layer burning...

If yours is up to date or you don't think anything is amiss with Nero, then your probably right its probably the media mate...

Wha' happened?

One minute I'm typing this next minute I wake up and it's 2am

So I went to bed and now here we are :)

Thanks CL, I'll take a look over at the Nero site.

And I just realised both my serial numbers were on display in my log, have edited them out.

Well I'll be blowed there was another patch, dated 31-03-07, which I believe is the first one to be issued since January 2006, but I could be wrong.

Installed the patch, this time it got to 51% and crashed

That's four discs wasted and still no luck burning, I'm getting peeved a bit, cos these datawrite disks are listed at most online media suppliers and seem to sell well.

I have ordered four Verbatim 2.4 x DVD+R's (cost £7.80) so I'll see how I get on with one of them.

Success! At last :thumb:

I now have 974 Publisher files taking up 8Gb of space on a dual layer disk.

To do this I had to:

1) Update Nero V6 with the March 07 patch.
2) Update the firmware of my Philips' DVDRW from V1.4 to V1.6
3) Use an expensive Verbatim disk.

And it took 40 minutes to burn

I'm going to back up data to the other three Verbatims and then not bother anymore, I think, too much bother and too much money just for the convenience of having lots of stuff on one disk.

The drive that burnt the disk accesses the burnt files easily, btw, whereas my Samsung DVD ROM drive in the same machine struggles a little to read the files, it takes much longer to read them than the Philips does.

Might also try backing up one of my legally purchased movie DVD's to a dual layer disc without compression to see if it looks any better than a compressed movie on a 4.2Gb disk.

Glad its sorted Flops :thumb:

DL discs do seem to be alot more sensitive to quality than normal DVD-R's etc - I'm finding that my hardware can use cheaper DVD-R's quite happily in most cases, but when it comes to DL they do seem to prefer the higher quality stuff, and those Verbatims seem to have a good record of compatability with most makes.
