problems booting

our ownwr brought in his home pc today.
when he boots xp his pc will go to the log in screen. he will select a user, than the pc will start to boot then restarts (it never reaches the desktop) it is the same when we try to boot in safe mode. he states the last thing he did was run the aol spyware program.
any thoughts short of formatting the hd

I don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem when I received shippment of my Micron PC
I called user support and they recommended I remove and reinsert the motherboard. They said sometim
they vibrate loose during shippment
Although it seemed too simple I tried and it worked like a charm....give it a try
