Problems at Startup

I am having two serious problems at startup. First, Windows Explorer
crashes, and continues to crash when it is automatically restarted. No
faulting module is given. This problem continues when I do a Diagnostic
Startup, and I'm very worried.

Secondly, an instance of svchost.exe crashes; the faulting module is
mprddm.dll. On a basic Diagnostic Startup this problem does not occur, but I
have not singled out the service that is causing it.

I can't tell when these problems will occur at any given startup. For
example, occasionally when I uninstall something Windows Explorer is fine
after I reboot, but I never know.

What other information can I provide to help fix these problems?

Well, you need to look for error inn the Event Viewer or a Device
malfunctioning in the Device Manager?.
Here is a Link explain the nature of that Error:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326531
How do you connect to the Internet? and do Run a Remote Access service or
VPN on your computer?.
I will check this machine for Viruses and Malwares and make sure it is clean.
How to access the event
Viewer do the following:
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc clcik [OK] on the event Viewer Look for error Messages (X)
and double click them to get more Info about the causer and you can copy and
past in your next post.

Thank you for the link, but I am not using Windows XP, not Windows 2000. As
for Internet connection type we use a broadband connection. Normally we have
a Remote Access Connection Manager service running, but I do not know what it
or a VPN does.

The explorer.exe error message contains:

Could you please clarify this for me <+:
but I am not using Windows XP, not Windows 2000.
Normally we have a Remote Access Connection Manager service running, but I
do not know what it or a VPN does. //+>.

VPN stand for : Virtual private Network with Tunnelling <PPTP, PPP > secure
network, and Remote access meaning have access to other machine or other
machines have access to your machine or Both machines have access to each
other remotely by you and the other party set and allow such a connection by
taking the right <hopefully> procedure in setting up such a service!.
If you didn't set the above and they are running, the chances are your
computer is compromised and infected, am I right?.
HTH.

There are two Remote Access-related services on this computer: a Remote
Access Auto Connection Manager (Startup Type: Manual, Status: Not started),
and a Remote Access Connection Manager (Startup Type: Manual, Status:
Started). Should these be changed at all? And are there any other services
relevant to this problem that I should check on?

Yes, they should started Automatically, try this:
Open a run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK]
Make sure these services started auto:
Remote Access connection Manager
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Telephony
Server
Terminal Server
Reboot your machine and see if the Error will reappear>
HTH.

I made sure all the services you mentioned were set to Automatic and
rebooted. The Windows Explorer error did not happen, but the svchost one
did. It was the same faulting module (mprddm.dll). I would like to start
the several services that were closed; should I?

Also I apologize that I made a mistake; we use a cable modem connection, not
broadband.

That's Okay, Try to Re-register these DLLs by opening the Run command and
type in:
regsvr32 rasapt16.dll
regsvr32 rasapi32.dll
regsvr32 rasscrpt.dll
regsvr32 maui.dll
regsvr32 mprddm.dll

Reboot your machine and see if the Error still appear>
Run these tools and see the causer in the background:
FileMon for Windows v7.04
By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/filemon.mspx
Process Monitor v1.1
By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/processmonitor.mspx

Another step is to uninstall the TCP/IP and Reinstall and Reconfigure.
It is late at night here in the UK, so please don't think I'm given up and I
hope if anybody else have good answer will provide it to you.
Good luck.

I downloaded both programs and they show a lot of information that gets
updated very fast. I am quite tired and would like to continue tomorrow;
thanks for the help so far.

Something to also say before I forget. When the svchost.exe crashes, the
only service that won't let me restart it is the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing service. It says "Error 5: Access is denied."
