Problems after reinstalling Windows XP

Margaret

The following is a result of my recent thread "error 1058" which was maily
dealt with by P.A.BEAR. which resulted in me reinstalling Windows XP.

Thanks for the added information, which I have followed. My System
information report is at the end of this. I have Spybot Search and Destroy
and Avira Antivirus installed. Not sure if AVG may be a better programme?

Things are now better but problems remain and are as follows.

1. On startup I get the message “sellect the operating system you want to
useâ€. I and give two identical choices “Windows XP Home Editionâ€. I can
either chose one or it progresses to the Welcome Screen after 20 seconds or
so.

2. My default drive now appears to be Drive D rather than C. If I want to
install a programme it will always be stored in D unless I browse and chose
C. I am therefore getting the message that D drive is running out of space. I
have looked at the D drive and it now has the folowing folders in it. RECOVER
– TOOLS – DRIVERS – DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS (462 subfolders) - PROGRAMME FILES
(461 subfolders) – WINDOWS (967 subfolders) – RAID DRIVER DISKETTE (2
subfolders) – SWCONF-DAT FILE.

3. A scan today with Avira detected and got rid of TR/Monder.aszi Trojan -
TR/Monder.atde Trojan – and an MP3 file which “Contains recognition pattern
of the EXP/ASF.GetCodec.Gen exploitâ€.

4. On my keyboard the @ key now produces “ and the “ key now produces @.

5. On shutting down I get the message “Access Violation 694C5405†along with
an OK button. The machine shuts down when I press OK.

Grateful for any further help,

Margaret

You now have a major problem(s),the reinstallation of xp was not performed
properly,by default the OS (xp) must have the letter C: not D: XP must have
created a new partition & installed itself on it..Youre choices, install xp
cd,boot
pc to xp cd,at menu screen press r For recovery console, select 1 for C:
press
enter key for password.Type:DiskPart In DiskPart, delete the unwanted new
partition,press ESC key when thru,type:CHKDSK C: /R Once thru,type:EXIT
Let XP start.Or,in DiskPart,delete all partitions,create one,press ESC
key,type:
EXIT Reboot to xp cd,select install xp,new copy,delete partition,create
one,let
