Problem with Windows Installer service

M

Mohamad Hindawi

I am trying to uninstall Norton Antivirus version 7. When I try
to use the control panel/add or remove programs to do that,
I get an error message saying
"The windows installer service could not be accessed. This
can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the
windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your
support personnel for assistance."

Any help?

Hi,

The windows installer engine may be corrupted.
Please try the following command in the command prompt:

"msiexec /unregister"
"msiexec /regserver"

No, there is no difference, still have the same problem.

First you have to check if the issue comes from norton or from the windows
installer engine.
Are you able to uninstall office program ?
Do you have the same error as with Norton?
If yes, that means that the issue comes from Windows Installer.

If the issue comes from windows installer:

If you do not already you can update it MSI 2.0 :

If you already have it installed you may have to troubleshoot you windows
installer engine.

If the issue comes from Norton:
Have a look on the symantec website. I propose to you to disable the norton
realtime scan engine before trying to uninstall it.

The problem is windows Installer, I can not uninstall any
program including Mircrosoft office.

I have windows XP, home edition. It seems this does not
apply to my case, but only to Windows 2000, 98 and NT.

Am I missing something?
