Problem with Win2K configured to use incoming connetions instead of RAS

Hello,

I have just finished configuring a standalone Windows
2000 server machine that needs to support remote access.
It is not part of any domain, so I used the incoming
connections option found under network and dial-up
connections to create a simple remote access server since
that is all I really need. I set up a handful of user
accounts to connect to the box, and everything seemed in
order. I tried to connect to the box, using a Win 98
machine, it keeps disconnecting immediately after I get
the message "Verifying user name and password" and I keep
getting the following error: "Error 720 - Dial up
networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network
protocols you specified in the server type settings.
Check your network configuration and try again." If anyone
has any suggestions or help, it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should be using the Remote Access Server management console to set this up. It is
real easy to do. You have to make sure that it can dish out tcp/ip addresses also.
The problem you describe may be that W98 does not have a compatible authentication
method, though I believe you can update it to use Mschap2. You can change
authentication methods in Remote Access Management Console in
server/properties/security/authentication methods and in Remote Access
Policies/properties/edit profile/authentication however the server setting must
support whatever you also choose in Remote Access Policies.--- Steve

Thanks for the help Steve. I avoided the Remote Access
Server manager because of the fact that this was a
standalone PC with no affiliation to a network or a
domain. I wasn't sure if RAS could be configured that
way, but it appears I was wrong. Thanks again.
