Problem with using Verizon Online Program

Hi folks,
I'm not sure whether anyone has had a similar problem to
mine.

Recently I re-installed WinXP Pro, and my internet
provider is Verizon DSL. After the system boots into
Windows, it always takes about 3~4 minutes
loading "Verizon Online Updates". After that, an error
message pops up and asks me to enter the user name and
password.

During the time of checking update, I cannot connect the
internet. (no program shows on desktop during the time
until the error message appears).

I talked to a Verizon representative for 40 minutes,
tried to uninstall the program (Verizon Online Support
Center) by all means he knows, and finally the update
service still runs whenever the system starts up (but I
can't find the program folder after I uninstalled it).
The system works fine even though I just exist the error
message without entering my username and password.
The representative "guessed" something is wrong during
Windows start-up.

It's really annoy to wait such a lonnnnnnng time...

Does anyone have any ideas about the problem?

Thanks

The folks at Verizon don't do too well when it comes to tech support.
The Verizon automatic updates are run automatically upon bootup. The
reason it takes so long is that the autoupdate program has to wait
until it can contact Verizon. Of course it then wants your password
and user name.

Do this: From RUN type in msconfig.exe and press enter. When the
configuration editor opens, click on the startup tab. Remove the
checkmarks from all the automatic running Verizon programs. Reboot.
You'll get a warning on bootup about the configuration editor. Click
OK "don't show this again". That should stop the auto updates from
running.

Thanks for advice. Yes, I have removed the service from
my nightmare.

Another strange symptom. In fact, before the Verizon
service was removed, Norton AntiVirus 2004
always "disabled" and became normal after 4 minutes the
error message from the service popped up. Although the
Verizon servic was just removed, Norton AntiVirus 2004
still disabled for about 2 minutes (half time) during
start-up, and I couldn't access the internet. I found
that it may have been caused by "Sygate Personal
Firewall" I installed. After I replaced it with ZoneAlarm
4.5, Norton works perfectly and I don't need to wait
anymore.

Anyway, thanks a lot
