Problem with updates

I recently loaded a trial Vista on my Vaio notebook, big mistake! I reloaded
XP Home followed by XP Pro upgrade, I had to contact MS by phone because of
the amount of times I had loaded XP Pro before the gave me a number to enter
which worked ok and allowed me to get the online the security check. My
problem is I cannot load SP1 or SP2 and some of the security updates, they
download alright but they will not run. SP2 gets as far as checking the
registration number but just sits there. I can't use the Auto updates becase
it alloows some updates and freezes on others. Can any help?
