Problem with TOC

Guest

I have a third level heading style (Heading 3) where just the text is
underlined (not the number).

When I generate the TOC, the text is NOT underlined.

I tried to modify the style TOC3, but even when I choose to underline “words
onlyâ€, it underlines the heading number as well as the page number.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

What you are seeing is to be expected. Settings in a heading style will
not be reflected in the corresponding TOC entry. And when you modify a
TOC style the formatting will apply to the whole paragraph.

It is possible to get the result you are asking for by using direct
formatting: Remove the underlining from the heading style and reapply it
as direct formatting (for example, by selecting the text and pressing
Ctrl+U); then update the TOC.

Note, however, that you may find it easier to just live with the
appearance that you have now, that is, either having the entire TOC
entry underlined or having no underlining at all.

Hi Stefen - If you apply direct formatting won't that formatting be removed
each time the TOC is updated?

Yes, if you apply the direct formatting to the *table of contents*
itself... But it will be preserved if you apply it to heading text.
