Heading Styles

I am using Word 2007. I am using Heading styles for my numbering. I would
like the first level (Heading 1) to underline the number, the spacing, and
the text following it. I am able to underline the number and the text.
However, I cannot seem to underline the blank space between the number and
the text. I can see a tab character between the number and the text, but I
can't seem to get that to appear underlined. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Unfortunately, you have run up against one of those "gotchas" in Word for
which there is (AFAIK) no workaround. Well, almost no workaround. You can
set "Follow number with" to "nothing" and add the tab character manually,
which will allow it to take on the formatting of the rest of the paragraph.

Thank you, Suzanne. Is there any way that I can put that tab character into
the "enter formatting for number" area of the style so that it isn't a manual
job on each paragraph. This is a legal document of about 200 pages, so this
will be a big manual job. The funny thing is we are able to do this in our
old Word 2000 documents but not using the new Normal in Word 2007. If I open
an old document, I am able to underline that space between the number and the
text. We have a lot of secretaries here who are getting very frustrated.

I did put a control+tab into that field area...a tab character appeared and
it was underlined. I thought I had it!! However, it still won't underline
that space between. I did try all the choices in the "Follow number with"
area. No luck! Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

We did it! In Normal, we changed all the heading styles to the exact same
format. Now when we add underlining to the number and to the text, there is
an automatic underline between the two of them. I know this sounds like a
crazy thing to do with the heading styles; however, at this law firm, there
is a "copy styles" feature which will overwrite heading styles to
preformatted numbering styles. The secretaries depend on this feature. They
never use the format of the heading styles in a new document. I do thank you

Well, I'm glad you got it working. I know that was broken in Word 2002 (and
I think Word 2003); there is evidently a way to fix it in Word 2007.
