Problem with System Configuration Utility

I opened System Configuration Utility , clicked on Selective Startup, and
checked all the boxes EXCEPT Load Startup Items, which I left unchecked.
When I clicked Apply. I got the following message:

"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified
changes."

I am the only user of this computer. I am the administrator of this
computer. Is there a special way for me to log in as administrator other
than just to log in?

Am I wrong...... I thought you checked only the ones that you wanted to load
at startup? I've been having trouble identifying which ones are vital and
which ones I can skip. But I've removed most of them by unchecking their
box.

Do you have some sort of system security software running? That may
be "protecting" you from changes in the startup configuration.

Try booting the computer into Safe Mode then launching MSCONFIG and
making the changes.

Note: Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a
startup item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the
consequences (if any) of removing it before you make any changes. Some
startup items are very important for the proper and safe functioning
of your computer.

Good luck

I did try all the things you suggested. No help. I keep getting:

"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.

Are you trying to change a Service (on the Services tab) by using
MSCONFIG?

To change a Service use Start - Run - SERVICES.MSI and make the
changes there. Again, please ensure that you are fully aware of what
you are doing and the potential consequences before making the
changes.

Good luck

Ron. I think he was checking boxes he didn't want to run and unchecking
boxes he wanted to run. So he was telling the computer to not do any of the
needed startup items. I could have misread it, but that was what I thought
he was doing.
