i have been reading all related posts, but can not find a remedy to my
dilema. when i go into system configuration to unck items in start up
,signing in as administrator. it states i am denied access to log in as
administrator. i am administrator. if i uncheck and restart it appears to
work. if i cancel out i am still asked to restart. i log in on save mode
under my account and the administrator account and i still get the same
results as in normal mode. asking for me to log on as administrator even when
logging on with built in administrative account. if i csncel out i anm asked
to resart just as when unchecking items. i have another pc with xp pro and
one with xp home. i am able to go into msconfig and make my changes using the
account i have classified as administrator. any ideas

Msconfig.exe has been disabled by some Group Policy.

Try this.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look in the right hand pane for a value called Disablemsconfig. If the
value exists, double click on Disablemsconfig and set the value to 0. If it
doesn't exist, right click in the right pane and select New, DWord value.
Name it Disablemsconfig and leave it set at 0.

You may also want to investigate the following registry keys for a
Disablemsconfig value.

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

from...
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21843287.html

Or just do a Search in the registry for Disablemsconfig.

Open the Registry Editor.
Hit F3.
Paste Disablemsconfig in the Find What box.
Click the Find Next button.
To keep searching if it finds Disablemsconfig, hit F3 again.
Keep hitting F3 until you see the Finished searching through the registry
message.

wdchuk58,

I do not quite understand what 000 reg-sz disablemsconfig means.

000 Not a clue.
reg-sz Is a String Value.
disablemsconfig means that msconfig IS DISABLED in your registry. The
question is, where.

You need to locate the Value Name disablemsconfig
disablemsconfig's Value Data is probably 1
Double click on disablemsconfig and set the value to 0
1 means that msconfig is DISABLED and will not work
0 means that msconfig is ENABLED and will work

disablemsconfig is probably in one of these registry keys...

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603

This key stores XP Search Files.

It's a list of items that have been searched for.

ACMru = Auto Complete Most Recently Used
