Mike,
You're saying that what I wrote isn't true?

No. I said it was your imagination.
I wonder how many
people have experienced what I was talking about, notwithstanding reviews on
registry cleaners, which vary in how much they clean. But the question is
not "do registry cleaners work?" (although I admit it actually WAS the
question) but my point is: "is a large registry responsible for slowing down
the system?" - and it is!

If you're still working on a 486sx, it might be.

Mike,
Okay, it's not a top-of-the-line model but, it's a Siemens-Fujitsu
SCENIC T with Pentium4 1.7GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM twin 32GB Seagate
hard-drives and running XP Pro SP3 - I guess you'd have to call it a
586d!!?
I had a multi-threading Dell Dimension for a while, that also suffered
slowing down as the registry got larger.
I don't think it's my imagination, the registry in this machine his 390,000
entries in it (according to regshot) against the 70,000 in a new
installation. That's got to slow things down!

You will NOT find anyone here who is a "regular" - and that includes
the entire list of MVPs - that will agree with you except for some
idiot named "Twayne".

You really don't want to be associated with "Twayne".

Hi,

Thanks for your instructions, notes and fast respond, but may I suggest and
send report of event viewer below first in order to eliminate as much as
possible possible causes mentioned in your e-mail. I just would like to find
out the main exact cause for this problem. If this still is not helpful
enough, then I will try first to recover registry backup of course (all
registy backups are saved!). I must say also, I have expireices that it is
not recomended to make so many edjustments and tests on sistem, specially
because I am not the expert!!!

I have problem with start up when turn on the computer. The start up
sometimes works much slower than before, e.g. a couple days ago. It
takes even up to 10 min to finish, BUT sometimes works without
problem. This is for me unusual and without any logic. What is
wrong?

I did several tasks to eliminate this, but uselless. I did as
follows: - scaning all computer with Panda AV Pro 2009 and also
with Panda Activescan
2.0 several times,
- defragmentation of c with windows tool,
- scaning with ccleaner - erase all unneeded files (cca 800MB) and
cleaning the register.

As far as I know, the ccleaner tool is tested tool, perfect for
home users and without any problems.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

Shenan said:
Don't clean the registry unless you know what you are doing.
(register vs. registry - incorrect vs. correct name - tells me you did
not.)

Did you save the 'backup' it asked you to before cleaning it? I suggest
putting that backup back in (find the file, double-click - merge it back
in.) CCleaner is generally harmless - but why take the chance?

Try the following:

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with
the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for
this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the
root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click
on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...6F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM
scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Visit your hardware manufacturer's web page (Have a Dell? Got to Dell's
Support web page - downloads and drivers and enter in your machine's
service
tag/serial number. Same for the other third-tier vendors like HP, Lenovo,
Gateway, etc.) and get the latest hardware drivers for each hardware
component: motherboard chipset, video card, network card(s), sound cards,
etc.

Free up space:

If you are comfortable with the stability of your system, you can delete
the
uninstall files for the patches that Windows XP has installed...
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spack.htm
( Particularly of interest here - #4 )
( Alternative: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm )

You can run Disk Cleanup - built into Windows XP - to erase all but your
latest restore point and cleanup even more "loose files"..

How to use Disk Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312

You can turn off hibernation if it is on and you don't use it..

When you hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the
system's
memory to the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys
file will always equal the amount of physical memory in your system. If
you
don't use the hibernate feature and want to recapture the space that
Windows
uses for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

- Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to Start, Settings,
Control Panel, and click Power Options).
- Select the Hibernate tab, clear the "Enable hibernation" check box, then
click OK; although you might think otherwise, selecting Never under the
"System hibernates" option on the Power Schemes tab doesn't delete the
hiberfil.sys file.
- Windows will remove the "System hibernates" option from the Power
Schemes
tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file.

You can control how much space your System Restore can use...

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Highlight one of your drives (or C: if you only have one) and click on
the "Settings" button.
4. Change the percentage of disk space you wish to allow.. I suggest
moving
the slider until you have just about 1GB (1024MB or close to that...)
5. Click OK.. Then Click OK again.

You can control how much space your Temporary Internet Files can
utilize...

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to a
size between 64MB and 128MB..

- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
something between 64MB and 128MB. (It may be MUCH larger right
now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
(the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10
minutes or more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
Explorer.

You can use an application that scans your system for log files and
temporary files and use that to get rid of those:

Ccleaner (Free!)
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Other ways to free up space..

SequoiaView
http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/

JDiskReport
http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/index.html

Those can help you visually discover where all the space is being used.

In the end - a standard Windows XP installation with all sorts of extras
will not likely be above about 4.5GB to 9GB in size. If you have more
space
than that (likely do on a modern machine) and most of it seems to be
used -
likely you need to copy *your stuff* off and/or find a better way to
manage
it.

After you have done the malware scans and cleanup, the Windows Updates,
updated hardware drivers and freed up space - redo your defragmentation
and
perform a CHKDSK as well.

Then return here and give the specifications for your machine. What type
of
processor (brand and # of cores and speed) do you have? What size hard
disk
drive do you have and how much free space on how many partitions? How
much
system memory do you have and is is being shared with your video card?
What
type of video card do you have and how much memory on it? (www.belarc.com
<-- download the free advisor, install and run it to help you get these
answers and more.)

That's all well and good. Doesn't change the response. ;-)

CCleaner - as I inferred elsewhere - is a good application but some parts of
it just should not be used by the general public without any understanding
of what they may be doing, imo. I recommend it all the time for cleaning up
old files and folders. The registry stuff - not so much.

You can probably *not* do the registry restore if you don't want to -
although you mentioned it, I felt I needed to respond. Did you know what
each of the registry entries you were removing were for?

Go through all the rest, however. Panda is a good AV system too - but
nothing is 100%. The fix for your update system and updating the Windows
Installer is just something to make sure everything is in order. Doing the
Windows Updates is just good sense. Freeing up the space - well - you used
CCleaner as I would have recommended as one tool - but it was the later part
of a larger process to free up space wisely, imo. ;-) Thus I gave the
entire process I would have gone through to free space.

So, again - my suggestions are the same - not to mention, you left out the
actual meat of the event log information and did not answer the list of
questions I had at the end of the instructions (processor, hard disk, video
card, memory, etc.) ;-)

I don't think it's my imagination, the registry in this machine his 390,000

Fred,
without looking into the links you provide, I can tell you why
it's rather pointless using registry cleaners. They daren't clean too much
out of the registry for fear of being too aggressive and that will
undoubtedly finish the OS! The amount of "rubbish" that can be safely
removed is going to be too small to be of any use. It's a hopeless task -
to "clean" the registry. However, in theory, IF (the saddest word in the
dictionary) you could "magically" reduce all the dead ends in the registry
perfectly and get rid of all unneeded applications that place large amounts
of data there and, all in all, cut in half the size of the registry, then,
I'm sure, would produce a significant speed increase. But, I know, it's NOT
going to happen that way. No cleaner has been written that can do anything
like that sort of decrease in size. My point being theoretical (because it
can't be done in reality), maybe you think it's not valid. I think that
it's important thing to bear in mind because if you keep your eye on trying
to avoid stuff that you know will increase the size of the registry, from
the beginning, then you'll surly succeed in keeping your system that much
sleeker from the start. I can't explain myself any better than that, I'm
afraid. But I will go now and look into your links as well, as I am certain
I will learn something. Thanking you for the feedback.

Hi,

I already replied a few days ago, but obviously my massage did not come.
However, I have done almost all what you suggested: malvare scans, cleanup,
Windows update, freed up space, defragmentation, CHKDSK and also a few
details from your list. I found out 8 spyware (from that 6 trojans) items
with antispyware scans in registry and install one important security update
from Windows (file »WindowsXP-KB958687-x86-ENU.exe«). Then I started up
computer several times and it seems that there is no problem of slower
starting up any more. I hope that it will stay like that.

Besides, I have all backups of registry of course, but I do not need to do
restore at this point, because, as I told you, problem is solved. I strongly
hope so!!!

Two things,

Firstly, If, as you say your system is running properly, Now would be
the ideal time to do a Manual System Restore, so that you can return to
it as a known good one in the future.

Secondly, with regard to your choice of a replacement Antivirus, I would
suggest you consider one of Eset NOD32, AVG, or Avira. Bear in mind that
AntiVirus programs don't necessarily look for or protect against other
forms of Malware like trojans. So I would suggest you install a
dedicated anti-malware program like Spybot Search and Destroy or
MalwareBytes in addition to any Antivirus package you choose.

Alister.

I suspect he may have meant to CREATE a new backup of the Registry, not
do a Restore. It would be a good idea to be certain you have created a
backup of the currently running-fine registry etc.. Actually, if you
know how, using ntbackup.exe to save the System State is even a bit more
thorough and includes a few more important startup files.

....
I am adding also my appinion (on basis of my experience on this

Anti-virus software, although it tries, is not good at finding trojans
and spyware. Anti-virus programs find viruses. Trojans, worms and
other malware are another type of creature from a virus. So I wouldn't
necessarily fault Panda etc. for not finding trojans and spyware;
probably most AV programs are likely to not find them because they are
not viruses.
You need an arsenal of anti spyware programs to keep those cleaned
off of your computer. The current concensus seems to be a minimum of at
least three different spyware detectors. I actually have a total of 5
in my own arsenal but I only use two of the most of the time; Adaware
and Spybot Search & Destroy. If they don't find anything to repair a
problem, then I use the others, but I haven't had to use those others in
a very long time. Still, it's good to have them in case the time comes
that they are needed.
Many people have different spyware detectors so there are a lot of
opinions about which are the best ones. The "best one" is the one that
fixes the problem you have<g>. The idea is to have sort of an arsenal
of spyware scanners to use when your AV doesn't fix a problem.
I am not saying Panda is good OR bad; I've never used it. Just that
since it's an antivirus program, it isn't designed to find spyware the
way the specialized spyware detectors are.

Twayne

yes, it is much easier when I use button of resembling two pages. I can copy

I must say that computer works ok now. I eliminated all trojans and spyware

Gerry,
unfortunately I still have problem with slower starting up of windows. I
really do not know what is wrong. I do not have time any more to investigate
all the time and also do not have time to format all disc and intall complete
system once more (it can take one week to install also all other needed

the ass for me. I can live the computer turned on all the time to avoid this,
but this solution, I suppose is not so good an idea and not always possible.
Besides, I have returned the oldest (last from 19.3.09) registry file from
backup list, and without any special success. Incredibly for me is that
sometimes works without problem, and then again with troubles...(if problem
is in registry, them EACH start up have the same effect, I suppose??).
Computer is scaned a lot of times with Panda, Superspyware (they works
correctly and are updated of course),... I alreay have some instructions from
others and I used, check them... of course.

Can you or someone else help me with short and clear instructions?

There are some details as Gerry asked:
