Problem with shares

Hi, I have a problem with getting an XP PRO system to
share files to another XP PRO system. Both system are
identical and are running XP PRO with SP1. Both are
connect together through a NAT, ping works both ways with
IP address and name. Shares are open to 'EVERYONE' on
NTFS and permissions. One of the systems has always
worked fine and shares from the other system have always
been able to be used by that system. The other system was
reformatted and a clean rebuild of the OS was performed.
For one time the files from this system shared properly,
the system was rebooted multiple times and still worked.
After the system was powered off and back on the
following day the shares would not work and have not
since. You can not access the shares from 'MY NETWORK
PLACES' in Windows Explorer, but you can from 'SHARED
DOCS'.I have tried resetting the IP stack and when that
showed no change the system was rebuilt from scratch. Any
help in this matter or direction in where to look for
help would be greatly appreciated.

Ray,

On each XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS consistently set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the Guest account is
enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

Chuck

Chuck,

I am running SFS disabled and checked all of your
suggestions for SFS disabled. I did change the 'Local
Security Policy to 'Guest only' and verified that the
guest account was active on both systems. Still the same
problem. Tried rebooting both systems and nothing has
changed. Attached is a copy of ipconfig from both
systems. The first is the system having the problem both
are on a workgroup called 'SAVANNAH':

I have never been able to change the 'Node Type' on
either system. All of the MKB's that I looked at have not
been of much help with this issue. All of the suggestions
they had I have already verified where correct. Any
suggestions?

Thanks, Ray

Ray,

Node types of "Mixed" and "Unknown" are normal.

Asymmetric sharing problems, when not caused by permissioning setup, are
frequently the result of firewalls. Has any software firewall (ICF or third
party) ever been installed on either computer?

Please provide adhoc browser view for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "net view >c:\netview.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\netview.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Please explain "You can not access the shares from 'MY NETWORK PLACES' in
Windows Explorer". Are the shares not visible, or do you get an error message?
And where do you find 'SHARED DOCS'?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify each computer by name and operating system.

Chuck,

1. Can't access shares from 'MY NETWORK'- the shares show under 'My Network
Places as ShareDocs for both BullyOffice and BullyShop. Error is
"\\BULLYOFFICE\SharedDocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource." You can access the files on the host system in
SghareedDocs folder but not under 'My Network Places'. I'm not certain but I
believe that the Firewall S/W was active the one time I was able to access
the files before he system was powered off. I have turned the firewall S/W
off several times with no change in the problem. ICF is not enabled on either
system.

2. The' Shared Docs ' are shares under the 'My Network Places' in Windows
Explorer.

3. Verified that both services where running on both systems.

The 'net view' command not running has me concerned though I'm not familiar
with this cmd. I have always used netstat.

Thanks, Ray

Problem is resolved. Reloaded XP Pro and was able to share all files without
any issues. Problem was narrowed down to a Firewal application ( McAfee).
Will address this with them. Thanks for all the help.
