Hello,
I recently built a standard 32-bit computer and installed windows xp on
one partition, left a partition open for data, and on a third partition
installed suse 9.3. At that time we did not have the internet. When
we got the internet, I installed service pack 2 on my machine (by
running windows update), since the latest versions of visual studio
require service pack 2. Before installing the sp, windows update
installed several other programs and patches and things. I was not
aware that sp is a cause of many crashes on many machines. I assumed
that such a widely distributed patch as the service pack 2 would be
quite reliable.
When the sp2 installation was complete, I booted the system to windows
and it got stuck at the blue windows xp splash screen. A few times it
actually played the sound played at startup, but I could not access
even the task manager (ctrl-alt-del did nothing!). After several
attempts to make the machine boot windows, I realized that it was
futile and reinstalled windows from my cd (without the sp). Luckily, I
did not lose any data because I had backed it all up to the other
partition, and all that I lost were installed programs (which are
easily reinstalled). However, upon reinstalling the sp again, once
again I had the same problem.
I have a legal version of windows xp which I acquired through msdnna
(or something similar) through the university where I study. I have no
idea how to install sp2 so that it doesn't suck, but if anyone knows,
please respond.
Thanks for your help!
