problem with quote character (") in wordpad

zirath

We've got win xp sp3.

Recently I converted a .doc file (word97) to rtf so that a friend could read
it using wordpad. She's got win xp sp3 also.

The file is readable except that all the quote (") characters around words
came out with an "A" at the beginning of the quote, and a "@" at the end.
(e.g. instead of "hello" it has Ahello@)

This isn't happening in wordpad on the machine that I used to convert and
send the file.

Help appreciated.

Is she using the same font as you ?

I have Word 2000 but this is probably the same as 97 in this regard.
There is a setting in Word in the
Tools->Autocorrect->Autoformat as you type
That you can enable "Smart Quotes". This will replace the straight
double or single quote ( " or ' ) with the curly styles. The curly-
style quotes have a different encoding which shows up as you see it
when you paste it into an app that doesn't support Unicode
characters. Try disabling the Smart Quotes feature in Word.

Thanks.

I think that is the problem. But now I need to replace all the curly quotes
with straight ones and it seems the "replace" command keeps putting in the
same curly ones even tho I disabled it.

Found the way to do it. I highlighted the whole file and then changed the
font. When I changed it back the curly quotes were straight.

Good. Thanks for the feedback.
Also try hitting F1 in Word for help, then search for "smart_quotes".

Sorry - scratch that.

Still have the problem but I have now found that it happens in word97 also.
If I highlight the whole document and then change the font, and then change
it back to the original font - all the quotes are now A(word)@.

Will check out the help on it.

I think I might have to go to each of the 140 occurences separately and
change it to the non-curly quotes. (Doing it separately is the only thing
that has succeeded so far.).

This came out of my MSWord 2000 help file:

------------------
You can find and replace all instances of single or double curly
quotes with straight quotes in your document. To do this, clear the
"Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" check box on the AutoFormat As
You Type tab. On the Edit menu, click Replace. In both the Find what
and Replace with boxes, type ' or ", and then click Find Next or
Replace All.

Thanks, but I had already tried that and it replaced everything with curly
quotes.

Maybe it's because I defragmented the drive, but I just tried highlighting
and replacing again and it replaced the curly quotes with straight ones.
