.doc file types are shown as wordpad

I used to use openoffice and it opened .doc files fine plus it saved .doc
files. I recently got MSoffice and uninstalled Openoffice. But now my .doc
files are listed as wordpad documents. I changed the file association to MS
Word and it opens in the correct program, but the file type and icon are
still wordpad.

I've tried to change in in the folder options view. But when I click on the
file types tab, DOC files are listed as already being MS Word. There's no
advanced button to select after I click on the DOC filetype. Instead, I have
a restore button. So I can't change the icon or file type even though I've
got the association working. I've tried restore and reassociating it via the
file types tab in the folder option dialog, but the result is the same...no
advanced tab, the icon is still word pad as is the file type.

What next?

I found the answer in the XP general forum. Here's the link

Basically, just delete the present DOC filetype and create it anew. I
don't
know what the problem is, but there seems to be some connection to having
run
Openoffice in the past as your .doc file creator.

It looks to me like this is an XP problem because I have had this experience
with other programs. The solution works out to be the same.
