problem with printing labels from Word with Brother HL-2040

I purchased a new Brother HL-2040 laser printer. It works fine except when I
try to pint labels from Word's Tools/Letters and Mailings/Envelopes and
Labels screen. If I try that, the printer does not print, and the red light
next to "paper" comes on. There is no paper jam. Changing the paper makes no
difference. When I turn the printer off and back on, the green ready light
comes on, and I can print nornally again EXCEPT when I try to print from the
labels function in Word. I tried installing the printer on a second computer,
a laptop, and it does the same thing. I have an old inkjet printed intalled,
and it works fine in printing labels from the Word "labels" function. I have
XP Home on both computers. This is not a networking situation. Has anyone
seen this, or ahve any suggestions to corect it?

Any chance this printer has a manual feed path? We have an old HP LaserJet
5 Color and whenever I use it to print labels, it wants the label sheet(s)
fed in through the manual feed port. The fact that you get a warning light
when the printer is NOT out of paper leads me to suspect it may be expecting
the label sheet to be coming from somewhere other than the main paper tray.

What happens when you print on the label paper using the printers internal test?
Power the printer off, press the button and hold it pressed, power on the
printer and when all of the lights are on release the button and briefly press
it once more.
If the same thing happens then the issue is probably paper related, and what
may be happening is that the printer is trying to pick up the paper but fails
due to the paper thickness and then reports a paper jam (actuallly a paper late
condition). Is the thickness of the paper within the printers paper thickness
tolerance?

It is not paper size related. I tried it with regular paper (not labels). and
it happens.

Bingo. If I feed the labels through the manual feed path in the printer, it
works great. Thanks, Hal. And thanks to the Microsoft Community.
