What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them cause assorted
problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

A recent version of the Trend software (details not available) causes
assorted problems in Windows Mail. So do most versions from
Norton or McAfee. These all need to be uninstalled, not just
disabled, to stop them from creating new problems, although they
are slow at creating problems.

Once you do this, you may have to delete your email account under
Windows Mail, then create it again, to finish the cleanup.

If this fixes your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a
custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email:

Thanks. But I wonder if I can solve the problem by installing Outlook or
another mail program like Eudora and uninstalling or disabling WinMail?.

I don't know what program would get around it. You might investigate
Windows Live Mail as a program that can gather the most information
from Windows Mail, though.

WinMail is very hard to uninstall without doing the same to the rest of
Vista.
However, it's essentially disabled if you click on Tools, then Accounts,
then
for each account, click on the account, then Remove, then any approvals
needed. After the last account, click on Close.
