Problem with multiple monitors

I have an Acer notebook computer with Windows XP SP2 and a 15.4" widescreen
display that supports Dualview. When I connect an external monitor, the
desktop becomes bigger than the display, and can be scrolled around by moving
the mouse toward the edge. The resolution is also incorrect on the external
monitor. Changing resolutions does not help.

Is there a solution to this?

Your notebook can not handle the screen resolution you are using.
Lower the screen resolution.

Thanks for your reponses. Lowering the screen resolution does partially solve
the problem, but the only resolutions that allow the desktop to "fit" on the
screen are 800x600 or 1024x768. As these are not widescreen resolutions,
everything is stretched on my 15.4" widescreen display, which uses a
resolution of 1280x800 when no external displays are connected. Is it
possible to make a more appropriate resolution work?

If it makes any difference, my graphics adapter is an SiS M760GX.
