Problem with MMC

D

Dave A

I have recently encounted an error message when trying to run Windows
Utilities such as "Services" and "Computer Management" in MMC. The error
message I get is:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\services.msc."
"This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was
created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have
sufficient access rights to the file"

The funny thing is I can still run a blank MMC instance and manually load
the relavant Add In, and this works fine. I found one user group that said
to try saving an instance and then replace the old one but it tells me it
could not save!

I tried running the System File Checker but was unable to rectify the
problem.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Regards Albert

SERVICES.MSC is just a prebuilt set of MMC tools saved
into a configuration file and is more for convenience.
You can restore the file using EXPAND from the Windows
command-line.
Start > Run... > cmd [ENTER]
d: [ENTER]
cd i386 [ENTER]
expand services.ms_ c:\windows\system32\services.msc
[ENTER]
(where "d:" is the letter of the CD-ROM drive with the
Windows XP installation disc)

I would suggest a system repair boot from cd and u will
get to a point where it will ask what would you like to do
a clean install or a repair choose repair
