Problem with Microsoft Updates - KB928366

G

Guest

I have installed this two times now and it continues to show when I check MS
site as not installed. Also, when I run Microsoft Baseline Security
Analyzer, it indicates a problem that this is not installed. My history on
MS shows it successfully installed twice. Anyone else experiencing this -
or know what the problem could be????

If all else fails, try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Download, install, run the utility and select the .NET versions you wish
to "clean up". After that, you will need to download and re-install the
..NET Framework versions which were cleaned up. Then you should be able
to install today's security updates. It worked for me! :)

Cyrus the virus read this paragraph : - Because .Net is so widespread and
many programs and internal development efforts are built on the framework,
the potential for the patch to break something is substantial. PatchLink is
recommending that customers take a phased approach to deploying the patch, by
first deploying to a test network upon which organizations should test
critical applications and then moving deployment up to increasingly critical
business groups or phases.
And here's the rest to read :

Installed it earlier today together with 6 others offered for my system by
Microsoft Update (.NET framework 2, XP, Office).

928366 shows in Add/remove. After reading your post, went back to Microsoft
Update, let it scan, shows no updates available.
I must be one of the lucky ones :)

XP SP2 IE 7. I don't use automatic updates.

Tried this - still won't install for me. And - the update shield keeps
appearing in my taskbar - MS really screwed it up this time, I think.

I've only done one or two XP machines and one Vista, so far, and haven't
gone back to check what is happening--I didn't get any failures except for
some HP printer drivers that were optional on the machines, as I recall.

My general experience with .NET failures of this sort is that uninstalling
the .NET version and reinstalling and then patching to date may be needed.
I believe there is a .NET repair tool somewhere--perhaps linked from a
blog?? that may be helpful.

Thanks--that's what I was looking for!

I'd recommend removing the .NET version in question--using this tool if
necessary (or perhaps after the removal) and then putting it back and
running W/M U until no more critical updates are found.

I suspect that the likelyhood of something breaking on the average home
users machine is quite low. Corporate machines where they are doing
development of internal apps on .NET may well be another story.

If anyone finds a solution, please post it - I am getting tired of looking at
the shield in the taskbar and having KB928366 install again and again and
again and again................

John,

The solution may have already been posted in this thread. Have you followed
the advice already given?

Are you referring to this:
Download, install, run the utility and select the .NET versions you wish
to "clean up". After that, you will need to download and re-install the
...NET Framework versions which were cleaned up. Then you should be able
to install today's security updates. It worked for me! :)

or this:
I'd recommend removing the .NET version in question--using this tool if
necessary (or perhaps after the removal) and then putting it back and
running W/M U until no more critical updates are found.

If so, YES I have tried them - and they don't work.
