I notice the following Critical Update tonight and since I am on dial-up, I
wonder if I should download it. Is it necessary? Will the entire 8.8MB have
to be downloaded?
Please advise

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB928366)
Download size: 8.8 MB , 1 hour 5 minutes

Yes, it's a "critical update" to enhance the security of your system.

aren't they all? I read the stuff about this one in the MS KB and
am not convinced I need it. not everything new is better, and MS
has a much worse than average record of creating side-effect bugs
with "fixes", so for me, I'm going to watch and wait to see what
may or may not surface on this one.

How timely - this update downloaded and ran automatically, but something is
wrong now - it keeps installing... over and over

You are lucky, on my system the update keeps on failing to install?

Many, not all, of the MVPs, Carey is one of them, simply try to
make it the user's fault instead of investigating the root cause.
It annoys hell outta me that customers have to do the regression
testing for MS, which is a powerful reason NOT to buy anything new
from them for at least a year after it was introduced.

which goes to why I do NOT install ANY MS updates until I lurk
for awhile and see if the water is safe to go swimming in again
or if I have to wait for a fix to the fix that fixes some
security hole that MS probably doesn't understand in the first
place

It is a hotfix, and you should install it.
You are a little late because this hotfix has been around for quite some
time now.
It has been loaded on this computer for more than a year.

And the same is true with MAC people, Linux people, etc... There isn't a
popular OS on the planet that doesn't have the same issues. The real
solution is to make on hardware platform and limit users to that
platform, so that the vendors don't have to worry about the Zillions of
different combinations of hardware, apps, updates, security products,
drivers, etc... Oh, wait, that would not be friendly... So, you have a
choice, suffer with the occasional problem update or standardize on
CERTIFIED HARDWARE AND APPS.

I downloaded the KB928366 to my desktop last night as you advised. HOWEVER,
today I was working with my laptop and decided to download the Critical
Updates and when I got to the Critical Updates page, I not only see the
KB928366 (NET.framework), but also ANOTER NET.framework Critical Update
download -
Why would there be two (KB928366 and KB930494) NET.framework downloads with
different Version numbers and Service Pack numbers?
-------------
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 Service Pack 3
(KB930494)
Download size: 3.4 MB , 10 minutes
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise your Windows-based system running the Microsoft .NET Framework and
gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer by
installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer. Details...

I had to uninstall this "Critical" Update since it caused more problems than
it was aware oif it fixing. See my other post.

Btw regarding your other post KB 928366 ids for V1.1 and KB 930494 for V1.0.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, but do not understand: "Btw regarding your other post KB 928366 ids
for V1.1 and KB 930494 for V1.0."

I downloaded both and so far - no problems.

I am also having issues with KB928366. It says in my updated history that it
has successfully installed over 15 times! I can't shut down my computer
without it asking if I want to install new updates. Does anyone know why this
is happening?

If someone from Microsoft could email me, I'd be grateful. Not sure I could
navigate myself back here...took me awhile to find this!

I'm having the exact same problem. Going to Microsoft Updates and hiding
this "Critical Update" seems to keep Updates from repeatedly telling me I
need to download and install this Hotfix I ALREADY have installed.

JimLA - I wasn't able to 'hide' this update (how did you do that?). I've
tried unstalling it...can't. I downloaded the microsoft update software to
uninstall the .NET Framwork 1.1 and then reinstall...it won't do that. I am
completely stuck.

I know others are having this problem...so I wonder if Microsoft is looking
into this so they can come up with something that we can do. While I
consider myself pretty computer literate, I don't like the steps to manually
uninstall the .NET Framework...sounds a tad scary for me.

I just hate seeing that little yellow icon down in my toolbar telling me my
updates are ready to install when I have done it TOO many times already.
Obviously something is wrong!

If anyone else has something else I can try...I'm ready!

Then you'll have to do a System Restore (it's under
START-PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS-SYSTEM RESTORE) and send your
computer back in time to a point before you got screwed..I mean...installed
the "Update."
