Problem with KB905749 update

Don,

I have two PC's with this same problem. I have a desktop and a laptop which
now (since recent updates) will NOT show any devices in the Device Manager -
so I too was glad to see this was an issue.

I shall try to uninstall that item you mentioned, but what are Microsoft
going to do about this problem generally? Many people will not often go to
their Device Manager, so I think that this is the tip of the iceberg maybe.

I'll keep you posted as to the results.

Peter.

Peter,

This issue showing up recently, seems to be caused by a Malware named
Apropos.C. It installs a Kernel driver with a random file name. More
information available at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.apropos.c.html

Removal tool:

See if running the AproposFix tool below helps:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14679793

Thanks to McCarthy for supplying the above URL. Note that the utility
referenced above removes a Malware reponsible for blank device manager.

Other possibilities:

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311504

Also read this,
"If Device Manager is showing nothing, then Its the plug and play service
that is the problem. But if the Device manager is showing the system_name
and not showing any devices in the window, then check the security
permissions on the Registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM .The
SYSTEM account must have full control permissions on this key in order for
the Device manager to list all the devices in the window."

KB905749 appears to be causing three problems on my computer: empty device
manager, slow Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer requires "http://" to open
pages. Uninstalling KB905749 makes all three problems disappear.

I tried the other suggested fixes, and none of them worked. (PnP service
was already running. aproprosfix didn't find anything to fix.
HKLM/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/ENUM has full control permission for SYSTEM.)

Autoruns is a programme, which list everything starting and
where it starts from.Try downloading and installing:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

You can save the output of the Everything tab to a txt file.
Place the cursor on any item in the list and it gives a save
as option on the File drop down. Post a copy of the suspect
entries giving details of the start location.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the ideas, Gerry, but they don't seem to show anything. I see no
suspect entries in the Everything output of Autoruns. And the Event Viewer
has nothing unusual. (It has entries like the 40 MsiInstaller warnings that
get logged every time I start Visio, but the Microsoft KB indicates that this
is expected behavior.)

Every time a new batch of Windows updates comes in, I get my hopes up that
this will be fixed. Silly me. I uninstall 905749 again and go on my merry
way.
