Problem with internal modem

Since upgrading to Windows XP Pro, when I connect to the
internet, my modem makes a continuous noise, like its
still negotiating with the ISP(?), only it isn't as I can
carry on using the internet, etc..
Can anyone help me with this problem?
 
Check that your modem settings are set to turn off speaker after connect
