problem with IE6 help file - seems to have vanished

Upgraded from WinME to XPPro. Since then, the IE6 Help menu button
"Contents and Index" no longer works. When it is clicked, nothing happens.
Using Windows troubleshooter hasn't helped. Control Panel's "Add and
Remove" option no longer lists IE6 - so I do not have access to a "detect
and repair" function (if such exists under XP). Any help in fixing this
will be appreciated.

TIA

The was the cure for Windows 98. Not sure if the same location and file for
your system.

This apparently happened after a windows update.
To fix the problem, find the Tshoot.inf file which should be in
c:\windows\inf, right click
on it and select Install from the popup list. Have your Win cd on hand.

Henri,

(my apologies if this is too long winded --- )

Thank you. I installed it -- but now what? What does it do/ how do I use
it? I assume it has to do with troubleshooting. (There's no change in the
Control Panel's Add/Remove listings -- still no option to repair IE).
Windows Help and Support always appeared to work just fine, with
troubleshooters and such before I installed Tshoot.inf. Both before and
after Tshoot, the IE troubleshooter doesn't offer any option related to my
problem. The installation of this Tshoot.inf does not appear to have had
any effect.

So I am still stumped (actually, given my computer knowledge, not hard to
do).

******* a search of "chm" files reveals that **iexplore.chm** is on my
machine (in C:\Windows\help) -- and clicking the file brings it up --- so
it has to be simply a broken link, of sorts, no?

Here are the lines of inquiry I have been pursuing, but I do not know if
they have to do with my precise problem -- the most likely, as far as I can
guess, is #3 on my list:

1............

I found there is a NoHelpMenu restriction in the following article.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323395
(there is NoViewSource restriction also mentioned in the article, but IE6
will allow me to view source, so that appears irrelevant)

The NoHelpMenu seemed like a possible culprit, but at present, as I look
through group policy, I find no setting available --

Using the group policy editor, this path ---- user
configuration\administrative templates\windows components\internet
explorer\browser menus -- offers options Help Menu options to remove tip of
the day, remove for netscape users and remove send feedback -- but nothing
about disabling Help itself. (BTW, the Netscape menu choice presently
appears inactive - no response when I click it, just as with "IE6 Help |
Contents and Index"

2..........

could this be my problem???
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630
(this patch is not listed among the various XP fixes in my Add/Remove
program listing)
this is the patch------
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...26-ae89-4cb3-a819-e6da160f2e66&DisplayLang=en

But ---- I have tested HTML help with OE, and with Dreamweaver MX -- and
their HTML help works just fine.......??? OE being a component of IE, (and
Dreamweaver being totally independent of IE6) --- So if they work OK, then
I don't have the problem spec'd in kb-811630??

3...........
Could this be a trashed or missing registry key? If so, how would I
determine this?

I have looked with RegEdit --- for stuff mentioning HTML Help

(HKEY_Local_machine\software\microsoft\htmlhelp) lists only "default,
reg_sz, value not set"
(HKEY_Local_machine\software\microsoft\htmlhelp\1.x) lists "default,
reg_sz, value not set" and " EnforcedDirectories, reg_sz,
%WINDIR%;%ProgramFiles%\Movie Maker"

(HKEY_Local_machine\software\microsoft\Windows\htmlhelp) -- has many
".chm" files listed, ---- listings refer to MS Office, Windows, Common
files, but nothing referring to IE6 or OE6 (and OE6 help works just fine)

******* as noted above, a search of chm files reveals that **iexplore.chm**
is on my machine (in C:\Windows\help) -- and clicking the file brings it up

(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Help_Menu_URLs)
lists the following "(Default); REG_SZ; (value not set)

(guessing here -- perhaps, in the last HKEY cited above, setting that (value
not set) to "c:\windows\help" would do the trick??....... I'd like some
confirmation of that hunch before I mess with the registry setting, as I am
very reluctant to further screw up things)

I am still stumped. Any further help will be much appreciated.

TIA

It's probably a bad registry key.

I do no have XP so cannot compare the keys.

Suggest you try in a XP group.
