Problem with HP PSC 1210

My HP PSC 1210 powers up with "Check Printer Cartridge" light flashing.
I've followed the "Help" section and discovered it is the Black
cartridge that causes the error. I then proceed to open the "HP Tool
Box" and notice the Black Ink Level is very low. Go out and buy a
refill kit and refill the 57 cartridge according to the instruction.
But now the problem still exists as before and I'm stucked. Any
suggestion will be appreciated.

The printer does not physically measure the ink level. Each cartridge
has a unique ID code. When you put in a new cartrdige, it assumes it is
'full'. The printer then just subtracts the ink it's estimating the
cartridge is spitting out to determine the level.

I believe HP's still typically only remember 2 cartridge ID's per type
(2 black, 2 color). If you rotate between 3 cartridges, it will forget
the 3rd one and assume it is full. There are also methods that involve
temporarily covering over some of the pads to make the ID change to give
the same effect.

The black cartridge is giving an error but you refilled the color
cartridge. (Black is the #56....) The printer will not stop printing
(or at least trying to) because a cartridge is empty. Most likely your
empty black cartridge has failed and will need to be replaced.

I meant #56, so I guess "Check Printer Cartridge" means something else
is wrong, not an empty cartridge and I need to replace it.

By the way, does any HP insider (programmer/designer) knows how to
determine the error code/type?

Thanks.

none of this stuff means anything. all you do is trot down to staples
or you other favorite ink hoot and buy an official hp ink cart and
install it. everything will automatically be taken care of.

I refilled and used my first #56 cartridge over 2 dozen times and it
continued to work even though the ink level indicator read "low."
Eventually it failed as yours did, and another cartridge (one that had
been "remanufactured" by a third party) solved the problem. Sixteen
refills on that one and it's still going strong. Printed with it just a
couple of hours ago.

For the maximum amount of use from a single cartridge, try to refill
*before* it runs dry.

Page 26 of the manual at
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bpu70201.pdf says to turn on the
printer, press and hold the Cancel button, then press the Copy/Color
button, then release the Cancel button. This should print a self test
page which has some diagnostic information. If you would like to scan
the result you may email it to me at (e-mail address removed) and I may be able
to tell something.
