Problem with home network and internet access

G

Guest

have an Origo ASR 8400 Ethernet / USB ADSL Router Modem on a BT Broadband
connection.

Initially ran it with a single machine, no problems.

Then decided to try and connect a second machine to the internet and create
a home network.

Both machines are using XP Pro.

The second machine is sending but not receiving any packets. Status monitor
shows it is connected at 100mbps.

Can be seen from the first machine but not accessed. It does not connect to
the internet.

The second machine does not have a firewall or virus software running.

Allowed access through the Norton Firewall on the first machine. Entered the
IP range.

Is there something in the advanced set up for the router that I need to
change in order for the second machine to be able to communicate through the
router?

Luke,

Is the Router/Modem running in bridge mode, or router mode? That is, is the
first computer on a private subnet, or is it getting an ip address assigned by
BT?

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we should be able to help
you figure it out.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Luke,

Well, to start with, Family is running IPV6. Are you doing that intentionally
(do you access any IPV6 web resources?) or did IPV6 install without your
knowledge?

You can remove IPV6 from the Local Area Connection Properties window. If you
need IPV6, we can try re adding it after you get file sharing working.

I'm sort of curious why Luke isn't getting an ip address (Media Disconnected?).

Has Luke ever been able to connect to anything successfully? Try swapping
router ports / cables between Family and Luke. See if Luke can get an address
with Family offline.

Cheers,
Chuck

Unintalled IPV6 from the Local Area Connection Properties window. Tried
unplugging FAMILY and plugging only LUKE into router, still nothing. LUKE has
never connected to anything. Changed its router connection port from 2 to 4,
no difference.

Router is running in normal mode not bridge.

Luke,

OK, that narrows down the problem a bit.

See if there's any diagnostics available for the Ethernet card on Luke. Make
sure it's not purely a hardware problem.

Try Device Manager (Control Panel - System - Hardware) for testing too.

Reconnect Family, make sure it has internet access (and router access).

If no hardware problem detected, try manually configuring Luke. Give it ip
address 10.0.0.7, gateway 10.0.0.2, mask 255.0.0.0.

After manual configuration, ping from Family and from Luke:
127.0.0.1
10.0.0.3
10.0.0.2
10.0.0.7

And post results of each of the 8 pings.

Reconnected FAMILY no probs with internet.
Manually configured Luke.
Pings for FAMILY ok to 127.0.0.1 10.0.0.3 10.0.0.2 all TTL64 timed out for
10.0.0.7
Pings for Luke all timed out except to itself at TTL128

Please be specific. Which pings on Luke failed, and which were successful?

Manually configured LUKE address to 10.0.0.7.

LUKE pinged itself successfully on 10.0.0.7 with response of TTL128.

Timed out on pings to 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3 and 127.0.0.1

cheers

Luke,

Now THAT's very interesting.

Generally, one would ping in this order:
127.0.0.1
10.0.0.7
10.0.0.2
10.0.0.3

Why? Start with 127.0.0.1, which is the internal loopback address. If your
network is properly setup, the internal address will always respond, on any
computer. Assuming that you get a response from the internal address, then this
computer external address, 10.0.0.7 is next tested. If both of those addresses
ping successfully, then you try another device, 10.0.0.2 (the router) or
10.0.0.3 (Family).

So why do you get a response on Luke from its own external address, but not its
internal loopback address?

Let's take a look at the static route tables for Family and Luke, maybe a clue
there.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
