Hi,

I have a home network using two PC's, one running Windows 98 SE and one
running Windows XP Home via an Origo ASR-8400 modem/router.

All runs smoothly if the Win98 machine starts first even if the XP
machine is not switched on, but if the starts first or starts with the
Win98 machine off it takes ages to start and the cursor keeps turning to
the hour glass every 5 seconds as if it is looking for something.

Is there a setting I can make in the XP to give the XP a set address or
is it going to be a setting I have to make in the router

Thanks

Gerald

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
One computer screw up the network
Symptoms: you have a workgroup network and most computers are win9x, NT and
ME. After you add XP computer into the network, you can't browse other
computers in workgroup list.
Resolutions: This is mostly like master browser issue. The simple solution
is stopping Computer Browser service on the XP. To stop Computer Browser
service, go to the Computer Management>Services and Applications>Services.

Thanks for the reply, I have only just managed to try it today but it did
not make any difference, after some checking around it seems that it is
only MS Works 4.5 that is giving the problem other programs such as
notepad and wordpad do not suffer with it.
