Problem with Footnote

I have a document of one page. In the middle of the text I have the text in
two columns (like newspaper column not a table). Insering a footnote in the
normal text which is not in between the column break is fine but as soon as I
try to insert another footnote within the column section Word puts the second
column onto the second page and the footnote of course also onto the next
page and not on page one.

What do I need to do in order to insert a Footnote in the column section
without loosing the layout?
