My DVD burner has stopped working. In Windows explorer when the drive is
empty, it is shown as 'DVD-RW Drive (E:)'. As soon as I put a blank CD
or DVD in the drive, the description changes to 'CD Drive (E:)' and I
get a warning dialog "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." when I
click on it or try to drag files to it.

Help, please!

1st thing you can try is go into device mgr. Go to the E: drive properties,
then delete it.
Then reboot. Windows will now refind the drive and reinstall the driver.
See if that helps.

Good luck.

Thanks, but that did not solve the problem.

How old is the burner, if it's been awhile since you installed it, perhaps
it's time for a new one. In this day and age it can be easier and cheaper to
just replace it if you can't find a solution. The Optical drives are pretty
straight forward.

If there's a problem you can turn off the system, unplug the power cord from
the tower, and check the ribbon cable connections, make sure they are
seated,

Is the inside of your tower full of collected dust? Take it outside, and
blow it out.
I use my shop vac with the hose in the exhaust port. Collected dust collects
heat,
which is the enemy of electronics.
