Problem with DVD Drive Out of Dell Dimension 8100

Hey guys. I've got a Dell Dimension 8100 that I barely use and would
like to put its DVD drive into my PC.

I went through the tricky task of takig the case apart for the first
time and removed the drive cleanly. However, once I connected it up
into my PC my computer will not boot WIndows properly. I get as far as
the Windows XP splash screen but then nothing happens. The hard drive
is mostly active and the DVD drive light blinks on quickly once every
2 seconds or so. I've had ot disconnect the power conector to be able
to boot WIndows.

The mwchine its being installed into is not a Dell machine so I'm
wondering if Dell have some kind of lock on their hardware to prevent
it being used in other machines?

In the BIOS setup screen the drives description is rather garbled but
I think it's a Samsung drive from what I can make out. I've ensured
that the DVD drive is the master and my CD writer is the slave.

I've posted my specs below so if anyone has any ideas they would be
much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Matt

If the drive ID is "garbled in BIOS", then you likely have a loose
connection or a even a bent (data ) connector pin on the back of the drive
itself.

Recheck the cabling, the jumpering of the drive and inspect the pins on the
drive itself.
