DVD-RW Drive won't work

My DVD-RW drive on a DEll Dimension 3100 stopped working. I bought a new one
and Windows XP won't install it. It tells me there is a problem. My Computer
guy has tried both IDE and SATA drives. I even tried to use a USB adapter on
the drive and widows doesn't even see the drive.

My Computer guy says that there is a Windows update file that may have
disabled the DVD hardware function in XP. What can i do?

Looks like a software issue.
You can try System restore to some known good state, or reinstall Windows.

Does the BIOS recognise either the IDE or SATA dvd drive without using a
usb adapter?

You could also check the BIOS to see if any IDE channels are disabled.

Can you test the dvd drive in another machine?

Another thing you could try is to boot windows in safe mode, enable boot
logging and/or debugging mode.

I was unable to reinstall windows until I booted into the utility partition
and did a test on the DVD drive. It all passed and I realized that the
utility had recognized the drive. Now it is installing Windows SP 1. I am
wondering if I should refuse to enable Windows automatic updating. I will
definitely have Windows remember the state the computer is in at each step
and roll back if the drive stops working. I'll let you know if the drive
still works after Windows finishes installing.

Dear friend,

As I wrote you earlier, I reinstalled windows. Everything is up and running
and my DVD-RW drive is working. There must have been an update that corrupted
it.

It worked! Thanks to all of you.

See above in my reply to PA. A Utility partition on my drive restored the
DVD driver and I reinstalled Windows. All is working well. thanks for your
suggestions. I got them after I was already into the reinstallation.

One more update on this problem: When I tried to reinstall Roxio Easy Media
Creator Suite, the DVD-RW drive was again disabled. So I use Windows restore
to go back to before I installed the Roxio and I have my drive back. I have
now put in different software to do what Roxio used to do for me. The
question becomes, is the problem with Roxio or with the Dell?

It can be caused by something else installed in this machine,
maybe even pre-installed by Dell
( have you reinstalled XP that
IMHO if you contact either Dell or Roxio support, they should
be able to sort this out.
