Problem with Classic Media player

D

David

I'm trying to use Classic Media Player V6.4 to listen to .ram files on
the web. The player pops up, it seems to be playing, but there's no
sound and the counter doesn't count. I'm using XP Home, he sound
system is fine.

Anyone used this player who might know what I'm doing wrong?

David,

The player is OK, but you need to have the Real Codecs also installed.
If you havent done yet, install this:

Real Alternative

(Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files. This way you
can play RealAudio and RealVideo files without having to install
RealPlayer. You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia.
The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well.
Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi
..smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages.
..smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip. This
is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic.)

After you have installed it, you can play all Real media with Media
Player Classic.

Good luck,

Thanks for the quick response, but I have Real Alternative V123
installed already.

Goofy though it may sound, check your volume doo-hicky in the tray.
I've played around with different players, music software, and other
applications that use sound and have found on more than one occasion,
the sound gets turned all the way down without my having touched it.

That was my suggestion, since it has happened to me on more than one
occasion. I thought somehting was broken, but it looks like that some
combo of codecs, WiMP Classic and data files causes this to happen.

Yes, I wish it was that easy. Unfortunately the volume control is
about mid way up the scale for all inputs.

Failing all else what are the disadvantages of installing Real Audio?
Someone said that it was bloated, and spyware, but another said that
you could choose to let it call home or not during installation. Which
is true?

Try Jet Audio. It doesn't need any add-ons to support RealMedia files,
it plays them natively. It's audio is noticeably superior to WMP9.

Unless Jet Audio has purchased rights from Real, Inc in the past 24 hours,
it does NOT play Real media natively. In order for ANY 3rd party
agent to deal with Real media, the computer must (repeat ... MUST) have
Real, Inc codecs installed. You can do that in one of several ways:
Install RealPlayer, or install RealAtLast, or install RealAlternative, or
install one of the KLiteCodec packages ... all of which sets the needed
codecs in place, whether legal or ethical is another question. But, the
bottom line is .. without Real codecs, Jet Audio will not deal with .RM
files or any other Real media, and as remarked above .. see first sentence.

FWIW: I've been told that the BBC has worked out a 'deal' with Real to
install a less bloated/annoying version of the RealPlayer? I've not
installed it here on my system (I use Real Alternative) but here's the
webpage to install via the BBC:

I installed Jet Audio on my system, and RealPlayer is nowhere on my
computer, yet I can still play rm files. Nor do I have RealAtLast or
RealAlternative. BTW, I installed Media Player Classic and it cannot
play the rm file. It gives me a message indicating that I must install
a codec. You do the math.
