Hi, since I installed Windows 2000 server on a PC where XP Pro was already
installed, XP doesn't want to load.

The Windows 2000 installation was made on a different partition that XP's
partition.

I have the multiboot menu with OS selection (from boot.ini)

When I choose XP professionnal, the windows loading bar appears at the
bottom of the screen for 2 seconds and then nothing : black screen... :-/

Thanks for help :-)

Overwrite the files ntldr and ntdetect.com on your system partition
(they are from Win2000) with the ones from your XP CD.

Best regards

Ludovic,

It is always recommended to install the "lower" OS first. In this case
Windows 2000 Server, and then Windows XP. Problems can happen if it is not
done in this order.

I recommend doing a Windows XP boot recovery.

With a setup like this have you considered giving VirtualPC or Virtual
Server a try? It does make stuff a lot easier...

Boot the XP CD-Rom and from the recovery console;
fixboot
to repair the boot sector. Installing Windows 2000 last replaced the boot
sector with older files that XP doesn't know. The repair will leave you
still with dual boot but with both OS's accessible.

You will have put on the Win2000 versions of the loader - ntldr, and
ntdetect.com. I would replace those with the XP ones, which can be
found on the XP CD, in the \i386 folder (those two files, unlike most in
that folder, are *not* compressed). Put them in the root of the
partition where the boot starts, presumably the XP one.

does it start in safe mode ???

Did you try LKGB

Greetings,

robert
