Hello.
I have WinXP and my sister has Win98SE. There is a network installed and I
have the following problem: whenever I try to access any network resource
that is in my computer from her computer, I can't. It asks me for a
password. It says the name of the resource (\\GigaEPSONSty for example,
which is the printer) and I have to type a password. Why? I have NOT setup
anywhere that it requires a password. I'm driving myself crazy about this, I
don't understand it. I try the administrator password or my WinXP account
password (it's the same, I'm the only one who uses my computer) and it says
it's not right. Even if I invent the name of a resource (for example
\\Giga\blahblahlbah) and try to access it it also asks for a password. It
also happens whenever I try to open Giga in the Network Neighborhood folder
(the name of the resource is \\Giga\$IPC (or something like that, I can't
check right now because my sister's monitor is broken and it will be fixed
for tomorrow)) and it asks for the password.
This is really weird, especially because I share my Internet connection with
her and we have no problems with that (I don't use ICS, I use a sharing
program such as Wingate).
Any suggestion? Thanks in advance!
-Damian.

Hi,
Win98
Create an account with at your sisters computer if you don't already have
one (Control Panel/Users).
Setup you log under Control Panel / Network / Primary Network Logon to
Client for Microsoft Networks

WinXp
Create the same account on your computer with the same password.

One more thing...
Do you have WinXp PRO or Home ?

I didn't understand you if you have set up Permissions on your shared folder
or not ?

First of all thanks for replying! :)
I have WinXP Pro. I'm on vacations right now and I'm using my PC remotely,
but when I get home I'll try that right away (my sis does not understand a
thing about computers and it would be too hard to explain her what do in her
comp).
I have only one doubt: before the system I have right now, I used to have
the same... but I formatted and re installed and you know. Well, before this
system I didn't have this problem, any idea why?
And no, I haven't setup permissions in my shared folders, and it is shared
with Everyone.
Thank you very much for helping!
-Damian..

Hmm,

Hope you're enjoying your vacation, and I won't say that I'm not jealous
:-).

The surest way to control you file sharing is to disable your simple file
sharing.

1.. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2.. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3.. Click the View tab, and then Clear this check box to turn off this
feature.
4.. Click OK
With this you get another tab: Security

The main concern is your connection to the internet. The problem is when you
share a folder with permissions for Everyone.

When you share your folder, you first remove everyone group from Permissions
(Sharing Tab) and you add your sister's account that you created earlier.

If your sister can have administrative rights on your computer that's it
(Administrators group is automatically added to security), if you don't want
to give her administrative rights, you must add her to Security Tab and
assign her the proper rights (Read, Full....)

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly about your prior system. You also
had WinXp Pro ?

Did you configure network and sharing ?

I didn't want to complicate things for you, but if you will be doing any
troubleshooting (and you probably will) it's easier to do it if you set up
you network as mentioned.

Another thing is you WinXp firewall. You can disable you firewall on your
internal network card (the one connecting you and your sister) and you set
up a firewall on every internet connection (In your first post you were
talking about ICS. I didn't understand why aren't you using Win ICS, because
of simplicity?).

Hope this helps and contact me again for any other problems.

Hi, thank you very much for your help. I'm really sorry if I took long to
read it, I came back from my vacations the day before yesterday.
ell, thanks for helping ^^
My problem right now is... my network =S It just does NOT work, and I need
to fix it right away.
Here's how I have set it up...
My comp (Win XP): in the folder Network connections there I have Local
Area connection and it corresponds to my network/lan card. The connection
uses these items: Client for Microsoft Networks; File and printer sharing
for Microsoft Netoworks; WinPoET PPPoE Optimized driver (guess this is
because of WinPoet, lol); Internet protocol (TCP/IP). I configured this last
one to use the address 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. That is
all.
My sister's comp (Win 98): In Network Neighborhood I set up the
properties of her lan card to: default gateway to 192.168.0.1 and the IP was
set to be set automatically, but then I changed that to 192.168.0.2 and
subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
Botch PCs are configured with an individual name and the workgroup name
as HOME.

Well... the network does not exist. What else should I do? =\
Thanks in advance, you were really helpful =)
-Damian.

Hi,
let's try from the scratch.

Can you ping Win98 Computer (ping it by ip_address (192.168.0.2) and by name
(btw: what is it ?))
On WinXp open cmd and write:

NET VIEW \\192.168.0.2

What message do you get ?

Do the same on Win98 computer;

Open command

Type:

ping 192.168.0.1

ping WinXp_ComputerName

net view 192.168.0.1

Did you enable File And Print Sharing in Win98 (Control Panel / Network) ?

Let us continue after you provide me with the information mentioned.

Thanks for replying, thank you very much!
Yes, File and print sharing is activated. My comp name is Compufak (Win XP)
and my sis' is Horror (lol I named it).
And no, I can't ping the computers from the other one. And when I open
Network neighborhood or the same thing in my comp I don't see any PC.
What could be wrong? This used to work perfectly til last week. I went on
vacation and 3 days laters it stopped working out of the blue.
Thanks for helping.

So if I understand you right you can ping both ways by ip and by name ?
Do you/she have an antivirus/firewall program (can you disable it for
testing purposes)?
I was reading you first post in which you mentioned that when you try to
access your other computer it asks you for a password ?
You were also saying that you ICS works. Does it still work ?

thanks for helping! =)
No, I can't ping computers =\
I use a firewall but I have deactivated it.
When I try to access a resource (for example the printer connected to my
comp) from my sis' PC it asks for a password, and I tried lots of password
but did not work, even blank. Why? I have not set up anywhere for it to
requiere a password.
I used ICS in the past but not anymore.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Damian,
do a test.

On Win98:
Start / Run: msconfig
Selective Startup
Disable Load startup group
OK
Restart

On WinXP:
Start / Run: msconfig
Selective Startup
Disable Load Startup Items
Services Tab
Hide all Microsoft Services
Disable all remaining services
OK
Restart

Try the ping again

Does you sister Log into hers computer ?
If yes, add her username (with the same password) to WinXP computer.

If you don't know what changed in those 3 days, we must do it this way -
step by step

Hi! Thank you all for helping, really!
Well My mom got kinda fed up of this and called some service guy cuz she
didn't want to wait anymore and stand my sis, lol.
Well, what I didn't know is that another guy came while I was on holiday and
messed with my sys's pc, he had changed protocols, deleted and added
things... well, a complete disaster! I think that's why Innet didn't work
and the network could never be accessed =\
Now everything works fine... at least for the last 3 days, lol.
The problem I still have is that when my sis tries to print something from
her comp it asks for the password, that's what I said in the 1st or 2nd
post, what would be causing that? And I had activated guest account when I
was away so my sis could use it and access the Internet but not I turned it
off.
Thank you very much for helping! I'm REALLY surprised, I didn't know there
would be so many ppl willing to help ^^

I'm glad that most of the things work now.

Did you turn off Simple File Sharing (Folder Options / View / Use simple
file sharing)?
Tell me what do you have in your printer security tab ?

Hello. I'm so sorry for taking a long time to answer, I had some problems =\

Well, yes, I turned that off.
In the security tab I have the following: Administrators, Everyone, and
Power Users have these rights: print, manage priters, and manage documents
allowed. Create Owner only manage documents allowed. Nothing denied.

Thanks in advance.
