password problems when sharing network resources

Guest

I have a home network consisting of two computers. One running win98 and the
other XP PRO. I want to share a printer installed on the XP PRO machine so I
set the "Share this printer" option and named the printer in the space
provided.

Next I used the "Add Printer" wizard on the win98 machine and then selected
"Network printer." When I browse for a printer my XP PRO machine shows up in
the "Network Neighborhood" no problem. I click on the XP PRO machine and I
get a box titled "Enter Network Password." Inside the box it says:

You must supply a pasword to make this connection

Resource: \\XP PRO machine\IPC$
Password:

I don't think I ever set a password for the XP PRO machine. Even if I did,
how do I change it or set it so I can get past this step?

Thanks in advance

Are you using the same username to log onto both computers? Password on the
Win98 box but not on the XP box? Make sure the same username and password
are used to log onto both computers.

I went to www.chicagotech.net/ipc$errors.htm and found 3 resolutions:

"1) Disable the Log On To Windows Domain Option.
2) Log on to the Windows 9x with the local user accounts database of the
Windows NT/2000/XP computer you are attempting to browse.
3) Disable User-level Authentication on the Windows 9x."

The problem is I can't figure out how to do any of them. Can you help?

I can log onto and share the c: drive of the win98 box from the XP box by
using a password I established for the win98 box. I never established any
username or password for the XP box. How do I do that and make sure they are
the same as the win98 box?

WinXP box - Control Panel, User Accounts. Change the password on the local
user account (the one you log onto the Windows 98 computer with) to match
the password that you log onto the Windows 98 computer with. Be sure the
usernames are the same on both computers.

I apologize. I think I may have not explained what I'm trying to achieve
correctly. Let me try again with a little more background.

First. Each machine has only one user an no passwords so that windows does
not ask me during boot-up which user to choose or to enter a password.
That's exactly the way I like it and want to keep it that way since I can
turn on either machine and walk away and come back to see my desktop up and
running. The XP box does NOT even have GUEST enabled. Granted, the only
difference between machines is the user names used. Let's call the user on
the win98 box <user98> and the user on the XP box <userXP>. Remember,
neither requires a password on boot-up.

Second. It was very easy to set up network identification for each box
(computer name, workgroup, & computer description.) For the win98 box I used
the "Network" icon in the control panel and for the XP box I used the
"System" icon to fill in the names. When I look at the "Network
Neighborhood" for each computer, I can see the name of the other computer no
problem. They also show up as being in the same workgroup as they should
since I gave each computer the same workgroup name.

Third. It was simple to allow the XP box to share the files and printers
(,ie, resources) on the win98 box. All I did was change the sharing options
in the properties tab of each resource on the win98 box. The nice thing
about win98 is it allows you to add a password for each resource. That's
exactly what I did for the C: drive on the win98 box so that when I look at
it from the XP box I get asked for a password. I can see and transfer files
no problem. All is well.

Now. Here's my problem. On the XP box I enabled printer sharing for a
specific HP printer through the properties tab. Nowhere does it allow for a
password to use that resource. That's fine. All I want to do is add that
printer to my win98 machine so that I can print to it obviously through my
home network. I'm not looking for any remote logon to my XP box from my
win98 box, ie, I don't want to log on as a user of the XP box and run my XP
box from my win98 box. All I want to do is print from my win98 box using the
HP printer connected to the XP box.

To use the HP printer from the win98 box I tried to install the driver. As
explained below, using the "Add Printer" wizard on the win98 box, I ran into
the problem "Enter Network Password." Inside the box it says:

You must supply a password to make this connection

Resource: \\<XP PRO computer name>\IPC$
Password:

All I want to do is print. I can't understand any of the solutions so far.
I'm not sure where to find these variables. I'm sorry to ask for hand
holding but could you describe an easy solution where I don't have to add
users etc. and can you refer to the solutions in a step by step process on
what to do on each machine (ie, win98 vs XP box.) The resolutions on the
chicagotech.net site don't go into great detail. Please remember, I want to
retain the fact that when I boot-up my machines I don't want to be asked to
select a user or password.

Thanks again. I hope I was clearer this time and I hope you can help. My
intuition tells me this should not be that complicated.

And this is, and will be, your problem. Unless the user names match on BOTH
computers or unless you reconfigure the XP computer to allow simple (guest)
access, you will NEVER get this to work.

All you need to do is add a user on the XP computer with the same name as
the user on the Win98 computer, as I suggested before. You don't need to
use passwords and you don't need to change the names you use to log on. But
if the Win98 user doesn't exist on the XP computer and you don't allow
simple (guest) sharing you will never be able to share from XP to 98.

Now I think we're getting somewhere. I need one point of clarification in
your last post. In the first paragraph you said "or" when referring to
allowing "simple (guest) access," and in the second paragraph you said "and"
when referring to allowing simple (guest) access.

Over the weekend I did some experimenting by enabling the "Guest" user on
the XP box. Windows created a desktop for this user which remains on the
hard drive even though I turned off the guest user afterwards. What was nice
is that my XP box booted to my user account without asking me which account I
wanted to log into, ie, the convenience I wanted.

If you meant "or" when referring to guest access, then can you tell me how
to reconfigure the XP box to allow simple guest access. Also, after
configuring guest access, do I need to turn on the guest account in the "user
accounts" tab of the control panel or can I leave it off?

I guess if you meant "and" when referring to simple guest access, I still
need to know how to configure the guest user and I would still like to know
whether or not I can leave the guest account turned off. If I have to add a
matching user (from the win98 box) to the XP machine, how do I do it with a
minimal amount of resources wasted (, ie, new user desktop residing on the
hard drive, etc.) and minimal permissions used (for security reasons.) I'm
never going to log on as this user on the XP box so I hate to have it impede
my productivity or clutter my resources.

Thanks again for the help.
